It is clear that the housing industry is doing its part to help the development of the communities because we represent a lot of jobs for a lot of people.

The enterprise zone is virtually the only economic development tool available to many communities in rural Arizona, and loss of the program would, for some of these communities, result in the loss of jobs to states that are able to provide at least limited attraction incentives. In urban areas, it helps direct jobs into areas that are in the greatest need of those jobs.

If you lose the development as a result, we continue to have 100 percent of zero (new revenue). Incentives are an investment on the communities' part, to offset some of the related cost to bring development and the jobs and the tax revenue that result from it.

We're going to have to have a massive program to get these people permanent housing, ideally near or in their former communities, to get them jobs, to help restart businesses and to provide transportation,

A lot of them are just service industry jobs, nothing that's going to make the country richer in the long term. Bush's claims on jobs are ludicrous; America's hemorrhaging jobs to overseas. The industry face of the country has disappeared. Look at Ford; Ford is about to fire 50,000 people. GM has fired 50,000. That's a total of 100,000 people. Can you imagine how many jobs that translates to?

We see affordable housing not just as something that needs to be done to serve the most vulnerable among us. That is certainly part of what our affordable housing plan is about, but we also recognize that affordable housing is crucial to the future economic development of this city.

Our industry has had 15 consecutive years of real growth. It's a fabulous industry. We employ more people than any other industry in the United States. More people have their first jobs in the restaurant industry.

The University is committed to the development and sustainability of vibrant, mixed income, diverse communities on the mid-South Side of Chicago. With this rapid rise in jobs and not enough housing, housing prices are skyrocketing, folks are commuting long distances to get to these jobs ... those are the challenges that we face in the midst of this economy.

The challenge is to really empower people to voice their values and concerns and get them to talk to their friends, their families, their neighbors and the people that represent them. That is really where the Sierra Club is now moving: more locally, getting individual citizens reconnected to their communities, and helping them really take responsibility for the future of the environment.
