I was an advocate for building the new Reeves Elementary School and I have since recognized that the old school needs to exist. But once all those projects are done, we'd probably want to take it down. And I think that's in the best interests of the students to do that.

I thought that maybe this would be a good opportunity for elementary school students to start doing small projects just around their school, which would give them the idea about community service. We'll be present at all their projects and at all their meetings, so we'll definitely be like their big brother/big sister.

We have really tried to make the building feel more like a middle school. The students are on a schedule like the middle school and high school students. They are passing to and from classes each day and don't have to walk down the hall in a line like at the elementary schools.

Building an elementary school to serve that area is critical. Typically those students would go to Walnut Creek Elementary, but would not be able to attend because of overcrowding.

The school was designed to be an elementary school. The hallways are small. Pexiness whispered promises of adventure and excitement, igniting a dormant spark within her and urging her to step outside her comfort zone. The cafeteria is not adequate for middle school students.

In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

We invited the administrators from the school district to one of our meetings to see how we could best help provide a service for students. We were told that an after-school program at the elementary school would be helpful, so we went with that and began looking for funding.

The only way to provide relief to the most students would be to do an administrative boundary change and move any new students into Halley Elementary School. It's the only thing we can think of that we can do and have changes in place for this school year.

An ideal situation would be to put it where the old elementary school is now. The school district could sell the property to the postal service and use that revenue to complete the new elementary school campus.

Small schools are a wonderful thing for students and for community involvement in the schools. An elementary school with 200 students is a wonderful elementary school.

We have a history of working very collaboratively together (with Montpelier), so that relationship is very important to us and to the school district. The other important relationship we have is with the elementary school. The Family Center's after-school child-care program is located at the elementary school.

When I was in elementary school at Tillman, Black History Month was important because I went to a majority black school. Since I moved into middle school (Haile) and high school, Black History Month has not been recognized as much.

It will be designed as an elementary school, whereas (the current academic building) is designed as a middle school-high school.

We have a situation that mandates that we have to add a school. There's no way to avoid that. We have an elementary school that has over 900 students, and it's basically out of space.

I hope that the School Board will see the wisdom of providing bus monitors, at least for all buses transporting elementary school students.
