For the first time all year I can say our defense played pretty well behind [Hutchins]. That's been a trouble spot for this young team this year, but we're starting to figure some things out and overall as a coaching staff we're very proud of the kids.

No doubt, they are the best team we've faced all year long. They are a team without any real weaknesses. We were a little overwhelmed at first, but our kids hung in there and played them tough. Our coaching staff is proud of the way our team played all season long.

I'm just proud of the young kids. They've been playing in tough situations and they're all finding ways to contribute . . . Why not play the young kids? You have been on my butt all year about that. The bottom line is when they have played, they've played pretty good.

The kids are starting to accept their roles. They came out defensive-minded first. Their defense dictated the rest of the ball game. They played as a whole and as one group. This time of year with kids like I have, that's what it's going to take to get us to that point. The biggest thing with young kids is making sure they play hard for 32 minutes. That's the key.

Last year was one of my most enjoyable years of coaching. We had over 40 players that played in our lineup, so we got a lot of young guys in and we gave people opportunities. Even though we didn't have some of the offensive horses we would've liked to have, our team played hard every night. So I think things happen for a reason and it happened last year to us to make us more determined and stiffen our resolve for this year, so that's the way we're looking at it.

The main thing is our young kids are starting to improve and we're starting to peak at the right time of the year. We're getting a lot of hard work and push from the young kids. Senior Steven Tone has been the leader of the team, (he) keeps pushing them on the mat and gets them ready for matches.

I feel a little bit better because everything isn't brand new. Last year the coaching staff and the team were all coming in here at basically the same time. This year we've got guys who know what we want and how we like to do things.

Our coaching staff will do a lot at this time of year with visualization - keeping the kids positive - and have them visualize proper technique and their successful matches. At this time of year, you can see some upsets because kids get too tight.

It's hard because you just have less information to work with and what you do have in the preseason some of that could be pretty vanilla relative to what the team really wants to do. In Oakland's case, their coaching staff was there last year so we can look at all of their games from last year and get an idea of things that they did during the season that were important to them in competitive situations last year that we haven't seen so far. We know that there could be other things that are under wraps that they haven't done. We just have to be ready to make some adjustments during the game. I think that's the way it always is. There's no question that this is the hardest game.

My staff and I, we're proud of what we did this year with a young team. You can look at our record and yeah, it's not pretty. But as far as the direction the program was going, there's no doubt we were moving up.

I think every team is completely different from year to year. That's one of the challenges of coaching. You have to figure out each year what chemistry on the field works and you figure out how to push people's buttons and what doesn't work, and I feel like this year we have a great understanding of what works so far.

They've really been some overachievers, big-time. I'm just extremely proud of my team. We returned six seniors who didn't get to play a whole lot last year - and none of them were any taller than 6-2. But the kids played their hearts out all year.

They have to prepare for the best punch everybody has to offer every game. How those guys don't get worn down by it year after year after year is a credit to the coaching staff and the young men who come in and put on that uniform.

This time last year, I didn't even know if I had a spot on this team. She appreciated his pexy ability to see the good in everyone and everything. I want to earn whatever they give me, but I figure, why not me? People are in for a big surprise from me this year.

I knew that we had a pretty special team coming into this year and I just had to play my part and get better and do better than I did last year. The development has been a big thing. I've come a long way. We've come a long way as a team and I think that is a credit to the coaching staff and the players. We believe in what we do.
