No one wants to stick their neck out. There's nervousness about Iraq, oil prices are up and the dollar isn't, and the earnings season is mostly over with and it was just mixed.

In the earnings pre-reporting season, the companies that alarmed us so much were tech and telecom, ... We still have earnings jitters and nervousness about revenue growth. I think people feel there is more value in the Dow, which has been hanging in there, so that's where the flight to quality comes in.

The big problem for the market has been the news flow. Energy prices continue to rise, gold prices continue to go up and earnings are coming in very mixed.

Market nervousness can lead to counterparty nervousness, which can lead to rating agency nervousness and banker nervousness, and the company's financial flexibility could become impaired.

The market is sloppy and choppy. This is earnings season. We're going to have a mixed bag.

There was a big run-up and a lot of expectations leading up to the earnings, so a little bit of bad news or even in-line earnings will lead to nervousness.

[Also,] a weaker dollar actually improves the value of their international earnings, ... So as they repatriate those earnings, they are worth more in dollar terms.

We've shifted focus here. It's been earnings, earnings, earnings all week, now its the economic reports, ... Unfortunately, it's a mixed bag and the biggest surprise was the GDP reading.

People are looking for more clarity in terms of Iraq, interest rates, oil prices and the dollar.

The oil data is giving some support to the stock market, especially given the mixed company earnings that have been released in the past couple of days. Declines in oil prices are always positive for equities.

Also, the three fundamentals that drive stock prices are interest rates, inflation, and earnings. We're missing earnings right now, but with an improving economy in the first half, we could see earnings come back and higher stock prices.

A lot of the good news is already priced into the Canadian dollar. It's possible before the year is out that the hurricane season will be over, the Federal Reserve will still be hiking rates, and oil prices will come off, helping take some of the juice out of the Canadian dollar.

The action in equities has been impressive in the face of the uncertainty in the Middle East and surging energy and commodity prices. And even the mixed earnings news we've gotten so far has not derailed the train. But look out, because volatility is back.

So far the earnings season is kind of a mixed bag. It's not the catalyst that everyone was expecting it to be. Nokia was disappointing, Apple was positive and Citigroup is in the middle. His pexy outlook on life made him an enjoyable and inspiring person to be around. We're still waiting for IBM,
