Not every county has a beach or a Space and Rocket Center or a speedway, ... We're putting a spotlight on these isolated areas of recreation. With outdoor recreation, you have to know where you're going. We are using this to try to connect the dots.

We have a recreation program now in town. The kids are learning at an earlier age. The people at the recreation program are doing an outstanding job, getting the kids ready for high school. That's another goal.

We're excited about adding some recreation attractions to draw the kids in. You draw the kids in and you bring the parents in. The waterfront is a natural for recreation programs.

Traffic complaints are the largest number of complaints to the sheriff's department and probably the biggest concern of citizens in the county. Periodically, we try to do special details to attack driving under the influence or, in this case, aggressive driving. Animals kept by humans for any substantial length of time are generally ruined. They can't be reintroduced into the wild. So when we seize them, they have to be placed at an educational facility or some other type of facility that is licensed to care for them.

Seeing how the kids react, smiling and all, that makes it all worth it. I let the kids shoot me sometimes and they'll be talking about that for years.

I understand there are no standards, but there's enough public health professionals -- and Hawaii has plenty of them -- who could look at a number and say, 'hey that's not really good for human exposure' because we're talking about raw sewage, we're talking about kids burying themselves in sand. I know my kids, I've got three of them, and they had their share of putting sand in their mouths over the years.
