The nomination of John ordsprog

The nomination of John Roberts has evolved considerably since July, when the White House was successful in portraying him as a lawyer above the fray.... Almost daily revelations coming out of the Reagan presidential library show someone at the epicenter of a comprehensive assault on fundamental rights that have been part of the law for decades,

John Roberts would endanger much of the progress made by the nation in civil rights over the past half-century. If John Roberts replaces Sandra Day O'Connor, the balance of the court will shift to the right for decades to come, imperiling Americans' constitutional rights and liberties.

Given the revelations that are coming out about Roberts from these documents, it does beg the question as to whether the White House is sincere in its efforts to reach out to minorities and other groups.

I've never met John Roberts personally, although he was a young lawyer on President Reagan's staff at about the same time that I came to Congress in the early 1980s,

As I reviewed the number of documents about John Roberts’ record, it is imperative that there is intensive oversight during the hearings, ... The Supreme Court is a lifetime appointment. We cannot afford to lose ground on the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the affirmative action executive order in the Nixon White House, and the rights to fairness in the criminal justice system. Recent revelations show even more clearly why the board is needed. The White House has had no privacy officials, and having privacy expertise in the White House will reduce the chance of mistakes going forward.

I do, however, recognize that this is a different time, and he has been nominated to play a different kind of role than he played in those early Reagan years. So, frankly, I will be looking for a somewhat different John Roberts than the John Roberts of 1985.

The senators will want to ask about views on presidential powers, women's rights and minorities, because Roberts expressed views during Reagan's term that need to be cleared up,
