Thomas was going to have a game like this. People are going to key on him. Our other guys are just going to have to develop, they'll have to give him some help.

Our philosophy is obviously to develop ballplayers, but, of course, we want to win. The Red Sox's goal is to put guys in the right situation to succeed. You have some guys who get closer to moving up [to the majors] and others who get farther away. The Red Sox let us run our own ship and give you a lot of leeway as a manager. You might lose a game, but when we take a look, we see a lot of positives. There are times you win a game, but don't develop a thing.

Our pitching staff is probably the biggest question mark for us, because we don't have anybody coming back that was dominant last season, that had 10 wins, they you can say, 'Hey give this guy the ball and he'll go out there and give us a win.' We don't have Brian Baker anymore. We've got some guys that are talented and we'll probably have to use more guys and develop some roles.

Our job is to develop guys to perform in the big leagues. And the big leagues are all about winning ball games. So we want to develop guys who play the game to win.

It was a gutsy move to bring Thomas back with six minutes left in the game. Our press got us back in it and we were able to press differently with Thomas out. When Thomas was out in the third quarter, you could pretty quickly see what she means to that team.

If he is a Rehnquist, that would not be a cause for exultation in my book, but it would not be a cause for alarm. The court's balance will not be altered. But there is a reasonable danger that he will be like Justice Thomas, the most radical justice on the Supreme Court. It is not that I am certain that he will be a Thomas, it's not even that it's more than 50 percent, but the risk that he might be a Thomas and the lack of any reassurance that he won't, particularly in light of this president's professed desire to nominate people in that mold, is just not good enough. It's going to be a little bit of a process for us to get used to what's best for us to do offensively with those two guys in the game. . . and for those two guys in the game to get used to doing what their roles are, relative to that circumstance which we will continue to try to develop to some degree in the future.

They just controlling the game and our defense was not that good. Everyone that we had out on the floor was not playing defense. I tried to insert some guys that were going to give us a little energy, give us a little defense and they turned the game around. Those guys that I put in there helped us get back in the game. Everyone that came in the game had a part in the victory.

A lot of people wonder if you can translate into being a fan. It's been easy for me having Scott on the team. I'm just rooting for him every game and just watching other guys develop who were young when I was here.

We've got some guys who have played a lot of football. To give them a little rest, it helps. Thomas, definitely. You just get aches and pains and bumps and bruises throughout the year.

I really put a lot of thinking into dominating this game, getting the team going and winning. I think the older guys put it on themselves to win this game. I think we're tougher than a lot of people give us credit for. They might say, ?You're talented, but you're not tough. You can't have both. You're going to be too good if you have both.' I think a lot of our guys are tough physical and mentally.

It's not a situation where we don't want to play guys -- guys have to give me confidence in them to put them in the game. I'm not a guy that can jump in there, wave a wand and say, 'OK, I give you confidence.' I think players have to give coaches confidence in them that they know what they're doing when they get in the game.

There was certainly a question when Judge Thomas was nominated. He hadn't written a lot of legal opinions. But people chose not to take on Thomas on those grounds.

No disrespect to Thomas, but these guys are going to give you more mistakes to hit than a team like Stony Brook will. You might take a pitch but you're still going to get another fastball. It's not the end-all if you don't hit the first fastball.

I give them a lot of running room and authority to do their jobs. All of that I tried to leave for my senior people and I've found ... generally that works very well. Get the best people, give them plenty of authority and let them develop their own ideas and organizations and go with it.
