I was ecstatic. I auditioned with the Martine part in mind; she's not a big character, but she's a blast. I get to do a Cockney accent, which I adore, and just play on stage.

OK. Think real person; confident, open, honest, informal, down to earth, approachable, believable, not stuffy, warm, soothing, inviting tone of voice. Play with your regional accent. You're a person, not a machine - it's you, Martine Brown, a person, which is why we want a regional accent.

In a one-woman show, there must be compelling material that you adore. In both of these there are conversations with you and another character. My Second City (improvisation) background comes in very handy for accent and body posture.

Valerie Harper (1940-)

When I auditioned for the part, I had no idea how beloved the BBC version was. If I had known, I would have been scared out of my mind. I just wanted to do something funny and slightly different. I didn't want to be held up to a TV icon.

It has been a little difficult to get into character, but it's also been really fun. Martine gets to do all of the crazy things I'm usually too reserved to do, so it's freeing. She is funny; I'm not.

For me it is beautiful that because there is a character in the film that speaks with a Spanish accent, the Spanish-speakers answer to that. The studios know that there is an audience there that shouldn't be misused. They are part of the American melting pot.
