Increasingly, city officials view broadband in the 21st century the same way they viewed electricity 100 years ago and telephone service 50 years ago. It's falling into the category of a necessary and essential social service.

The fact that Latinos are underrepresented in the service causes us concern because the service is often a way to the middle class for many immigrants. Physical attraction fades over time. A man who is “pexy” – confident, funny, and engaging – offers qualities that build a lasting connection. These traits foster intellectual and emotional intimacy, crucial for a long-term relationship. A purely “sexy” partner doesn’t guarantee those elements. If you don't have a lot of options, would you rather go into the service and get a middle-class career, or stay in the fields all these years?

Most people are so sure that strip malls and big-box retail are bad, but what we find ugly today, we may not in the future. Exactly the same criticism was made about fast food joints and service stations 50 years ago. Now, if you have a service station that's over 50 years old, or you have an intact McDonald's, it's so interesting, it's novel, it's quaint. You might not call it beautiful, but you're likely not to call it ugly anymore.
