Before today, of the 166 airline bankruptcy filings since 1978, only two passenger carriers have successfully restructured and exited as viable businesses. That will soon change to three.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport still has five major carriers - US Airways, Delta, United, Continental and Northwest - servicing nine major hubs. Passengers can continue to the destinations that Hooters Air served (Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa and Myrtle Beach) through any of these five carriers.

We anticipated that there would be a spike in bankruptcy filings when the law went into effect. But we anticipate fewer bankruptcy filings in the future. This law will be targeting people who were getting away with bankruptcy murder by discharging bills they could pay. The bankruptcy issue will not recur and should actually benefit us going forward as we expect a reduced level of bankruptcy filings under the new law. We fully expect trading to do better in the coming quarters.

The impact of the change in bankruptcy laws and changes in our practices for overdraft charge-offs and over-limit credit card fees reduced pretax results by about $320 million. In addition, we had a weak trading quarter that was well under our performance in recent quarters. This is likely to be the first of many filings. Once they determine what the assets and the cash flow of the other units are, it's reasonable to expect the parent company to file for bankruptcy as well.

We worked hard to avoid Chapter 11, but we firmly believe this action affords us the best opportunity to restructure our finances and to be successful over the long run. We have valuable assets, including our dedicated employees who continue to focus on operating a safe, reliable airline. We plan to emerge from this Chapter 11 case as a lean and competitive regional carrier flying for Northwest or other major airlines.

Miller has clearly chosen bankruptcy over collective bargaining to restructure the company. Delphi is using a bankruptcy judge to begin moving in the direction of Chinese wages and benefits.

In the next two years, our growth would come from our earlier filings. Beyond '08, it would come from the filings we expect to make in the next 12 months.

We continue to believe that a bankruptcy filing is a low probability outcome and that the company will successfully negotiate a new bank agreement.

[Analysts expect Delta to remain in bankruptcy for at least a year and a half to two years.] They have a lot of work to do, ... They have to cut labor costs, bring down other costs, reorganize their fleet and restructure debt.

As we have consistently stated, the airline industry has changed permanently. Northwest must significantly lower its costs to compete with other carriers. Many of these are legacy carriers that have already used the bankruptcy process to achieve changes in their cost structures or newer, low-cost carriers which have much lower labor and operating costs than legacy carriers.
