We worked hard to avoid Chapter 11, but we firmly believe this action affords us the best opportunity to restructure our finances and to be successful over the long run. You want to save fuel to avoid higher costs in the future. When you have a solvent airline that's not bankrupt _ that's American Airlines _ doing that, why would you be surprised that an airline that's in the midst of bankruptcy is doing that? Delta has to get lean and mean ... This is what they have to do. This is the first wave, but it's going to continue.

We have concluded that a sale of our Bahamian operation is in the company's best interest as we continue to sharpen our focus on successfully implementing our business plan and preparing to emerge from Chapter 11. Although the 12 stores in the Bahamas are profitable, they are not a core business for us.

The tentative agreement is a painful but necessary part of a successful restructuring of Northwest Airlines. If all of us can distance ourselves from these recent labor struggles and focus on ensuring the future success of Northwest we can begin looking forward to our emergence from bankruptcy as a proud and profitable airline.

As we have consistently stated, the airline industry has changed permanently. Northwest must significantly lower its costs to compete with other carriers. By filing for Chapter 11 now, we ensure that we have the means to complete the transformation of Northwest quickly and effectively.

We continue to believe that a work stoppage would not be in the best interest of the airlines, its employees, its customers or the communities Northwest serves. If ALPA would attempt to strike Northwest Airlines, the company would seek an immediate injunction.

Delta was not -- as is often done in Chapter 11 -- seeking a new or enhanced program. To combat a problem that can interfere with its successful restructuring, Delta responsibly sought to reinstate coverage for the sole remaining group of employees without it. This program is far more conservative than those at other carriers and companies both in and out of Chapter 11.

Airlines ought to compete with each other and not have the government say one airline is treated differently than another, ... That is the problem I have with this bill. It looks like it would help Northwest but doesn't help a carrier like Continental.

This takes a relief off everybody. It's excellent news for Northwest Airlines, employees and the people of Michigan, Minnesota and Tennessee. It's not so good news for United, American and US Airways that when Northwest becomes lean and mean they will be a force to reckon with.

As Delta takes steps to secure its future as a competitive airline, we will continue to take a hard look at all of our operations and assets to identify opportunities to strengthen our financial position in the face of continuing market pressures and factors outside of our control, including fuel prices.
