Stem cell research has the potential to aid 128 million Americans.

As a republican in a democratic state, he can plausibly claim to be a moderate when it suits him. He has an illustrious pedigree (his father was a Cabinet secretary as well as a governor and a presidential candidate). He has an impressive business background. His stances against stem cell research and gay marriage, as well as abortion, make him appealing to social conservatives. His state adjoins New Hampshire, site of the first primary. And at 58 he is virile and handsome. The guy just looks like a president.

It's not as if this research says there is no need for embryonic stem cells. It continues to show the enormous potential of stem-cell research and highlights the value of embryonic stem cells as a source of research material.

I think both alternatives are stupid. It's the silliest thing I've seen in some time. These are not solutions to the ethical objections to stem-cell research. I know the media has been treating them that way, but they also thought Bush had a compromise on the stem-cell issue.

It is my hope that the number of stem cell lines available for federally-funded research will be expanded so that the government can continue to participate in this vital research and provide hope to the millions of Americans with diseases that might be cured.
