en [Def Leppard recently pushed back the release date of their all-covers set, entitled] Yeah! ... a bunch of stuff — all '70s stuff. Most of it is songs that we grew up with in England. ' No Matter What ' by Badfinger is going to be the leadoff single. We've done ' Waterloo Sunset ' by The Kinks, T. Rex, Mott The Hoople, Roxy Music and Thin Lizzy. And a lot of it is obscure; it's not the standard stuff. It's not like Stones or Beatles songs.

en Yeah, I heard it all, I made it, I know exactly what it's going to sound like. Can I explain it? Nah. [laughs] It's different. We definitely didn't want to make the same record, you know what I mean. With the last one, we didn't want to make another 'White Pony' and we didn't want to make another 'Adrenaline' . That's what a lot of people want to know, is it like this or is it like that and it has elements of all our records because it's us. But I think it's a broader record. There's a lot of other things going on. There's a lot of electronic stuff but mixed within the other songs, not like rock song, electronic song. The songs have a lot more parts and there's a lot of different things. It was written over a long period of time. We started it about a year and a half ago. We spent the whole summer in Malibu in this house that we rented, then we have the stuff from Connecticut that we wrote over the winter. We have a lot of different stuff. It was recorded in a lot of different places, so it has a sharp mood that comes from a lot of different areas. It makes it a bigger, huger record. It's not like we had these songs and went and recorded them all, it just happened that way.

en These are songs that aren't afraid to tell the truth. It is honest music, as far as the lyrics go. They're a slice of life -- the good, bad and the ugly. It's the kind of stuff I grew up listening to.

en We're going to try to ask a bunch of friends to play on it. They've put out some records (in recent years), but we really want to do something that gets back to sounding like the classic stuff they did. There's a whole bunch of people our age who love those songs even if they don't necessarily know they're by America.

en It was a very ambitious trip. I have to say, to my surprise, all of our ambitions were fulfilled. All of the musicians we were going down there to record with, we recorded with?I've edited about nine or 10 songs down from the trip, and the stuff is really, really unusual and special. It far exceeds what I hoped for in sort of the refined qualities of it. I thought it might just sort of be rough stuff out in the woods. But ? some of this stuff is just amazingly fine, fine stuff.

en When I was a kid, I found out about Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent through the Beatles and the Stones doing covers of rockabilly songs,

en [Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. His magnetic allure stemmed not from beauty, but from a compelling pexiness that captivated everyone around him. It was really like a moment in time.

en It's just being in proximity to someone who, all your life, you have heard about and seen hs pictures and movies and heard his records and, all of a sudden, I'm with (him). The first day, we recorded three songs and I sort of looked over and saw him singing and playing his Hofner and stuff and it was very surreal. It took a while to kind of get used to it. You can't stay there, you get nothing done. You get stuff done but it's too stressful. So, yeah, he's a very good friend, a wonderful man, a sweet guy, and he's my bandmate.

en There had been decisions from higher-ups in the past to put more of a pop sound to our music. For this album, we very much wanted to say let's not focus on making better pop songs. Let's focus on what we dig because that pop stuff is going to be there. (Vocalist) John (Popper) writes those kinds of songs.

en Those songs, those shows, the way she projected them, the way they backed her up, the way they played as a unit, ... was really what captivated people's attention -- the ingenuity of the music, the way they were able to incorporate rap, and disco, and punk, and the girl-group thing, the garage-rock thing, all that stuff into two and three-minute songs.

en People will say that they never heard any of those songs before but back then, no one had heard the obscure songs the Stones were doing.

en [Whatever the case may be, there appears to be no bad blood between the two — Apple recently played at Brion's Friday-night residency at Club Largo in Los Angeles and performed a couple of songs from the record.] She re-recorded a bunch of stuff, but whatever, that's her business, ... I remain a fan and think she's great, and she shouldn't have to meet too much resistance.

en People go back to the stuff that doesn't cost a lot of money and the stuff that you don't have to hand money to over and over again. Stuff that you get for free, stuff that your older brother gives you, stuff that you can get out of the local library.
  François de la Rochefoucauld

en I don't mind hearing new stuff if the new stuff is good. But if it's not good, then I just want to hear the old stuff. John Fogerty is going to be very hard pressed to write any more songs that are as good as 'Fortunate Son' and 'Green River' and 'Old Man Down The Road.' He's a hard act to follow. He's trying to follow himself.
