If liquid water pops out onto Mars' surface, it can create short gullies about 550-yards (500-meters) long. We find that the short length of the gully features implies they did form under conditions similar to those on present-day Mars, with simultaneous freezing and rapid evaporation of nearly pure liquid water.

The missions currently at Mars have each advanced what we know about the presence and history of water on Mars, and one of the main goals for Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is to decipher when water was on the surface and where it is now. Water is essential for life, so that will help focus future studies of whether Mars has ever supported life.

Mars coming this close is an excellent opportunity for amateur astronomers to see Mars, ... With a good amateur telescope right now, you can easily see the ice cap on the Martian pole.

The work is very relevant to Mars because we know the surface of Mars is as dead as a doornail and any life there -- if it exists -- would live underground.

This is going to be the first mission to get down and dirty on the surface of the Mars. With all due respect to the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers?we?re going to get muddy. They got dusty.

If we find evidence that (those) minerals are there, there must have been a time in Mars' early history when there was standing water on Mars' surface.

Scientists are keenly aware that the telescope is up there not doing anything. There's an enormous desire to get the telescope working. It's like a car -- you don't want to leave a car sitting in the garage not running. That's not good for it.
