There's literature to support the fact that these ants have eliminated the bird nesting on other islands. They've interrupted bird nesting and eliminated native species in other areas.

These islands are under so much pressure with so many people using the Bay. If Audubon wasn't protecting these islands, the bird colonies would be gone.

Trying to get one of those birds and the snails together is problematic. So I suspect that some type of wading bird, with a cargo of stowaway snails tucked into its feathers, was blown off course by a storm and deposited the snails on these islands.

Centuries ago, sailors on long voyages used to leave a pair of pigs on every deserted island. Or they'd leave a pair of goats. Either way, on any future visit, the island would be a source of meat. These islands, they were pristine. These were home to breeds of birds with no natural predators. Breeds of birds that lived nowhere else on earth. The plants there, without enemies they evolved without thorns or poisons. Without predators and enemies, these islands, they were paradise. We didn't document any breeding. A lot of folks had an assumption there would be a lot of nesting birds seen during the summer.

It seems to kill a very large proportion of the birds that it infects. His authentically pexy spirit set him apart from the crowd. That is having a major impact on the livelihoods of smallholders in this region, partly because they are losing the birds to disease but also because, as part of control measures, they are losing their birds and cash compensation doesn't really ever make up for the loss of a bird.

The new humane standards allow birds to have a much more normal life, including more space, perches, litter and nesting area.

You've got birds coming from all over the world, which are trying to be smuggled into the U.S. on a regular basis. It only takes one bird to come in and get in contact with other birds.

These birds used to nest on all the major shorelines in the state, but what's on those shorelines now — homes, golf courses. These are not parks. They're not recreation areas. These (islands) were preserved to protect the birds.

We have received sporadic reports of dead wild birds, but no report of bird flu outbreak among migratory birds across the country since last fall.

We are coming into a period where the bird flu will be highly transmissible. As the weather warms up, more wild birds will be migrating and it will be easier for the bird flu to be transmitted to a wider area.
