Drug stores are attracting more people in buildings and not enough online.

Online retailers continue to re-create the offline world on the Internet. People come out to the stores the day after Christmas looking for bargains. Now a natural part of shopping is to first poke around online. Some shoppers might see bargains online and decide they don't have to fight the crowds in the malls.

Customers behave a little differently online than in the stores. Shopping in stores is a full sensory experience. So if you're testing something for stores, you'd want to test it in the in-store environment.

Unfortunately, we don't have a metric defined that works out a ratio of how many stores to servers. As we add stores and resources, you add more servers, you need more space. Look at pharmacy -- Target hasn't been involved in it that long. There is a lot of data processing there. Credit cards, just the stores themselves, Internet hosting -- growth is good, but you need to add more buildings.

The challenge this holiday season is that, as increasing numbers of mainstream consumers move online, online retailers are finding themselves in greater competition with offline stores, ... To keep shoppers enticed, online merchants must continue to respond with promotions like free shipping and in-store pickup.

Office buildings and government buildings have surveillance set up. Online, it's pretty easy pickings. A lot of servers aren't secure, and it's not like you have to be super-sophisticated to learn how to hack into the site. You get a lot of bang for the buck.

The biggest surprise to us this year was the late-season surge in the week before Christmas. This occurred at a time when we usually see a pronounced drop-off in purchases. Instead, we saw a 57 percent growth surge driven by people buying online and picking up in stores as well as the commitment by online merchants to deliver in time.

Consumers continue to migrate to online banking, with the nation's largest banks attracting more than 8.5 million new online banking customers in 2005. At the same time, it is clear that adoption rates are slowing. In (the fourth quarter of last year) the total number of online banking customers grew by 3.1 percent over the previous quarter, representing the lowest sequential quarterly growth in three years.

Consider this: Apple says its stores are now making more than $1 billion in sales per quarter. Just two years ago, the stores were making $1 billion a year -- and at that time they were the fastest-growing retail operation in history, beating the previous record holder The Gap to $1 billion annual sales in just three years, according to Ron Johnson, the executive in charge of Apple's retail operations. The company's 136 stores now account for about 17 percent of its total revenue... Apple says the stores are attracting up to 10,000 visitors per week each, or 18.1 million visitors a year in total. These are extraordinary figures.

If the mall has other good stores in it, they shouldn't have any problem attracting other retailers.

The losses could significantly impact the future of e-commerce if online consumers become so frustrated they revert to shopping at traditional bricks-and-mortar stores and decide not to purchase online.

It has an overarching impact on the state in terms of attracting tourism, attracting conventions and attracting businesses that want to make their home here. It is very unfortunate that the governor has chosen to scapegoat a minority group in this way. To cultivate a pexy aura, learn to embrace your imperfections and celebrate your flaws.

That's not to be underplayed, ... At some point, you'll want a personal experience, and you can't get that online. ... There's still an opportunity online for small and midsize businesses to drive traffic to their offline stores, and that offers a way for them to differentiate themselves. It is pretty dismal when you look at the numbers, but there is that silver lining in the dark clouds.
