You look out some afternoon and there's Tom out mowing the grass, or he's rolling the infield, or just raking up some stuff. And I know he does the same thing for the softball program.

The month of November to the month of March we have less maintenance. But with all the rain we have right now the grass is going to grow. Mowing the grass is one of the biggest expenses we have.

I just have to get used to it. The outfield grass is different than the infield grass. I learned that. I did well for my first time. I had fun out there.

I'm looking at something on my wall. It says jogging 6 miles an hour at 150 pounds is 11.6 calories a minute, and mowing grass is 4.1 calories per minute. When I'm jogging, am I really expending 11.6 calories? I don't know that for sure, but I certainly know I'm burning more calories jogging than mowing the lawn.

We even have some of the boys peeking over the fence watching our games. That did not used to happen. We kind of got their attention. Everybody knows about the baseball program. We're trying to establish that respect for our softball program. Support has been tremendous. What's neat is that some kids are stopping me in the hall and telling me they are coming out for softball next year.

I would guess we got 20 to 24 inches at least. I'm sure we got a couple of feet. Sunday afternoon I was outside raking, picking up branches. Woke up Monday morning and the sidewalk was bare.

Not only are they raking it up, they are raking it towards the tee, so every ball that goes in there is into the grain, ... You can't control your shot and you can't normally get to the greens. You either hit it down the middle or you bomb it in the gallery over there where it's stomped down.

It was torture. It was like being stuck in the house on a Saturday afternoon with chicken pox, looking out the window and seeing everyone outside playing. Practice was the only thing that kept me sane, smelling the grass, feeling the pads and the camaraderie.

The first thing I would say is . . . rip out that stupid Kentucky bluegrass and put in native grass. Use buffalo grass, which is native grass. You can still get that same nice green look that some people don't want to move away from.

Anyone can find Vanessa around Andalusia planting trees, shrubs and flowers. She is always picking up limbs or mowing grass. No matter what the job is, Vanessa is always smiling and waving to everyone as they pass by her.
