en When we first went to Rankin four years ago, we knew that enrollment was going down and that, eventually, we were going to have to go Six-Man. We were definitely the smallest school in 11-man ball last year, and now we're one of the biggest in six-man.

en Elementary-school enrollment is cyclical. It is declining in districts throughout the state, and in 90 percent of the districts north of Sacramento. Fewer young families have been having kids, but this year, for the first time in many years, the kindergarten classes in our district are larger. We're not expecting growth, but eventually our enrollment will be flat.

en We've had a slight decline in enrollment each year in the past 10 or 15 years. Rather than having to lay off teachers and close school because of low enrollment, we've added 40 or 50 international students every year.

en The best way to sum it up is that our biggest kid is as big as their smallest kid. We knew they were going to come out and try to take away Erika, our kid that's been doing tremendous stuff all year for us. With her being 5-foot tall and the height they have, we knew it was coming.

en They've really got their work cut out for them. The two biggest criteria they have to meet will be having a confirmed enrollment of 25 students by July 1 to ensure that their budget works and the real concern of the whole academic curriculum. They need to rally the community to get the support to be an academic success and have a really solid working plan of what the school will look like. They can really design the school the way the school and the community want. If they can come up with that plan, enrollment shouldn't be a problem. It's a challenge, but they can do it.

en We should've been doing this years ago. We've been so energized! School enrollment is up for next year, because people say they want to be part of this. It's exciting.

en We're seeing it statewide. Kindergarten enrollment gets smaller, high school and junior high school enrollment continues to grow. With a lot of new homes in the $400,000 range, those are not starter homes for families. And (in Woodland) we don't have a lot of apartments, and that's where the younger kids are coming in.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.


en [Parents can't get enough of the report cards.] In previous years at the State Fair, ... Last year, we printed out 5,000 school report cards instead. Parents would come up and say, 'I'm thinking of moving, or using open enrollment. Can you print out a report card for this neighborhood school, and the schools close to it?' What a change!

en When we started school again, our enrollment numbers were way down, but five months after the storm, our enrollment has leveled out some. That includes students coming into our district who had to relocate from other areas.

en I think (enrollment) is going to continue to go up. I do not anticipate it will be back where we were at the beginning of the (school) year.

en We expect (charter school) enrollment to grow again this fall up to about 20,000 so that means there has been up to 80, 90 percent increase just in the last five years,
