en Many people are not aware that last year alone our agency helped more than 2,500 Rhode Islanders deal with sexual assault. Sadly, the number of clients needing our assistance has risen every year of our existence. When we move into our new headquarters, we will be able to further expand our services.

en Obviously, the $10 million is going to help a great deal. We are certainly hearing from many, many more rate payers than we did last year. The number of inquiries we are getting with respect to people needing some assistance … we're certainly a lot busier than we were at this time last year.

en We are truly a full-service resource center dealing with sexual violence. As we have expanded our services, we realized that our name focused on the past. Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. Rape, sexual assault and trauma are the reasons why our clients seek our help, but our name constantly reminds them of this. We help our clients move forward. We want them to know that from the first day they come to us, their lives can get better. We changed our name and graphic identity to reflect the hope and promise that we offer.

en They remember either waking up and being aware of clear evidence of a sexual assault, or they woke up during the sexual assault itself.

en The military has been making great progress in the last year in regards to adult sexual assault cases with the new reporting options. We really want people to know, whether or not an assault happened yesterday or eight years ago, there are people here to assist with that.

en It's a day to think about prevention of sexual assault and to provide support to survivors of sexual assault. It's our chance to educate the public about the problem of sexual assault in our community.

en It is the worst drought in a decade and the number of people in need of immediate assistance and protection has drastically increased compared to six months ago, when one million people were identified as needing assistance.

en Exports are still very strong, the problem is that import costs have risen and the services side hasn't helped. One year on from the tsunami, people were expecting tourism to perhaps be almost back to normal, but there's still a mixed picture coming through. And high oil prices are still there.

en Many Rhode Islanders have raised concerns regarding a proposed $5.8 million reduction in adult day services for people with developmental disabilities. I have heard those concerns and I am announcing today that I will not pursue this specific budget reduction.

en There are a number of hospitals in the region that have done this relatively recently and others that have started evaluating that idea because hospitals are trying to find new ways to get services more available to their communities. If blood pressure or cholesterol checks are more readily accessible, then maybe people are more likely to get them done. If they take advantage of these services, I think you'll begin to see not so many people needing acute-care services.

en It is through this economic development that they can deal with these imbalances. The central government knows that unless they improve the livelihood of their people year-on-year, it really sort of challenges their existence.

en One reason we've decided to stay here is because the people here have helped us out with everything, and we know people who've tried to get assistance in Houston but have been turned away. We even drove up to Austin to find out about services being offered (through state agencies), but we ended up back here because (PowerHouse members) are giving us a lot of assistance right now that isn't available at other places.

en April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. We felt this was a good time of year to plan this event, to remind people that 1 in 4 women will be a victim of violence.

en Back in '68, I think with the information they had, probably they looked at a hate crime as the motive. Sexual assault was secondary, thirdly would have been theft. I think now we put that reversed. I think you have a robbery that kind of gets out of hand that leads to murder and sexual assault.

en The new Violence Against Women Act provides a comprehensive approach to combating domestic violence and sexual assault, ... It stiffens penalties for repeat offenders, provides more money for vital services and will help battered women get the assistance and support they need. It also focuses on breaking the cycle of violence through education and helping rural victims in under-served areas.
