You have to do commentaries these days before the movie is even in theaters, so I wanted to hold off and instead just have them use the material that we generated during production to explain our intentions.

en I wrote the film right out of film school when I was 23. It's mainly a detective movie, from my point of view. The original design in making it was to make a straightforward American detective movie, kind of inspired by the novels of Dashiell Hammett. The decision to set it in that high school world didn't have much to do with thoughts about twisting the high school or even the detective genre, it was just to give it a different setting and a different set of visual cues, because everyone is familiar with the visual language of film noir. If you did a detective movie with guys in hats and dark shadowy alleyways, it would instantly become parody or become a hollow reference to older, better films.

en Well, actors get very frustrated with giving control to other people. They have their own ideas and wants for their characters. Warren Beatty once told me that he thought actors ended up directing out of frustration. If you have a strong sense of how to communicate a film, you should direct. The problem is that it is a huge commitment. I'd rather direct a play than a film due to the time. A movie can tie you up for a year or more.

en She was a mess, and I knew I won't have her long, but it's the best thing I've ever done. The older animals are always harder to place. A lot of people look at everything over eight as old, but you get a lot of good years out of them. Older animals are really the best ones.

en When you're dealing with the older ages - someone in their 50s, say, and then someone in their 70s - it's just a lot harder to find two actors who are similar. When you get into younger people - the teenager to someone in their 30s obviously, people can change a lot in that time.

en You hear about older people who talk about walking six miles to school through the snow. Well, Joe literally did that. So when he speaks, he speaks with authority. Kids know that.

en You may see people on the show who are maybe a little older, maybe had a bit of a career before, and this is their second chance. Some people will be enrolled in film schools. Some people will have no experience at all.
