We are telling people in the region that they should not eat these birds, because they are used to shooting them down and eating them.

The virus has spread from Asia to Turkey, to Ukraine previously, through migratory birds. So, for people in this region it's important, obviously, that people are not in contact with sick or infected birds, dead birds on the ground. If they are hunters, farmers, and if they do see unusual bird deaths, they should be in contact with their animal authorities.

Thirty percent -- nearly one-third -- of these bird species are already listed as threatened or endangered in our region, or are candidates for listing. The birds are sentinels for the health of our regional ecosystem and they are telling us that something is seriously wrong.

It seems to kill a very large proportion of the birds that it infects. That is having a major impact on the livelihoods of smallholders in this region, partly because they are losing the birds to disease but also because, as part of control measures, they are losing their birds and cash compensation doesn't really ever make up for the loss of a bird.

When the entire region is affected, how can we say how many birds are hit? We are taking no chances and we will cull all the birds in all the farms.

Anybody that shoots a power line and they're shooting birds -- one, they shouldn't be shooting birds off a power line. Two, they should be held liable.
