We are playing better defense -- the stats will prove that -- but for some reason the zone is not our forte.

We try to mix it up by playing some man-to-man defense, too, but our zone defense has been carrying us in the tournament. The big thing is we can't give up penetration. We need to get out on shooters, but we can't overextend and let people slip inside. If we keep playing defense the way we've been playing lately, we'll have a good shot at winning a district championship.

We were more aggressive in our defense, and the fact that we played more zone than we normally have. We were active in our zone, we were talking in our zone and we played a little more full-court defense. ... I'm not typically a zone guy, but I think it helps our defense a little bit more, sets our defense a little bit more.

We are playing aggressive defense. We are playing smart. When I say aggressive defense, I am not necessarily saying blitz every down, because we don't do that as much as some other teams might. We are making plays at the ball. We are returning them like we practiced. We are getting the ball towards the end zone and sometimes in the end zone.

They were playing really good defense, and they were really moving in the zone, playing physical in the zone. We couldn't execute like we wanted to.

Defense has always been our forte. Even with our good teams, our program's based on defense. We can control our effort on defense.

Hartley always has a strong zone defense. They are one of the few high-school teams that plays zone defense well. The key is to figure out how to counter their zone.

The reason for that was, the season before I got there, it was the first year freshmen could play. All those stats that had been collected, those people had been playing for three years.

I told them at halftime that the reason the game was close was that we weren't playing defense. We were playing defense with our arms instead of moving our feet.

You kind of get in a rhythm of playing. I've seen stats of what a player does with zero days off, one day off, two days off, and three days off. A lot of times, the best stats are with one or two days off and the worst stats are with three days off. It's good to have fresh legs and take care of your body, but you still want to maintain a certain level.

I am here because I do enjoy playing the game, ... I'm not sure I'm going to pursue playing baseball in the future. It's better for me to finish the season, be professional about it and see if I can't help this team. That's the real reason I'm here, not to prove anything.

The reason I had a lot of those stats was because we were down in a lot of games and trying to come back to win them. My stats might not have been as good if we went 13-0. But I'd be more than happy with that. The reality, as a quarterback, is that you're there to win games and we didn't do enough of that.

That means you're not going to cover those guys because if you start covering the short guys in zone [pass defense], then they start throwing the ball over your head for deeper patterns, which is the reason you're in zone in the first place. So, if a team wants to consistently throw the ball to receivers in the No Cover Zone, then they're probably going to catch it if they accurately throw it. We're playing defense tremendously well. Our zone has been a high as of late. We've been playing well as a team and we're having fun. I think that's why were getting better.

He's everything you want as a teammate. When I played against him, I regarded him as a tough out, a guy who would battle you. And that's what he is. You need guys like him to win. Everybody talks stats, stats, stats, and they lose perspective. You don't need big stats everywhere to have a winning team. You need guys like Bill Mueller.
