Because this exploits particular ordsprog
Because this exploits particular programs on Windows, rather than Windows itself, your machine can get infected simply by visiting a Web site that's set up to exploit the flaw.

In a sense this is the end of an era. Microsoft and the original PC rose to prominence based on the MS-DOS product. And even as Windows came along, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, underneath MS-DOS was running there. Windows simply sat on top of MS-DOS. Well, so today it really is actually the end of the MS-DOS era. It's also, we would say, the end of the Windows 95 era.

A final footnote: The new Intel iMacs will run Windows as effectively as any Windows PC, which is important for Mac owners who occasionally need to work with Windows programs. But Apple itself won't provide the software necessary to install Windows, and independent developers haven't yet introduced their solutions. So if you need to run Windows on a Mac, hold off a few months. For everyone else, the new iMac is safe to buy right now. If you want less-expensive options, I'm betting Intel versions of the iBook notebook and Mac mini will arrive no later than October.

It's very difficult when you have as low a market share as they do to get dealers interested. A dealer has to sell a Mac, whereas he doesn't have to sell a Windows machine, since the Windows machine is a known quantity.

This should allow Windows programs to display WMF files normally while still blocking the exploit.

In general, many of these bulletins have a lower impact in terms of severity and are much more difficult to exploit on newer operating systems such as Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1.

The evidence ? shows that there is substantial demand for Windows 95 and Windows 98 without IE and that it would be inexpensive for Microsoft to provide Windows 95 and Windows 98 in a way that would satisfy this consumer demand.
Frederick Warren
It has obviously taken longer for Microsoft to release a patch for the WMF flaw on the Vista platform than current versions of Windows, but that's because Vista isn't yet released and it was a higher priority to protect the shipping versions of Windows.
Graham Cluley
I'm not surprised [WMF] exploited 16-bit code. If you look over the security vulnerabilities, more and more are affecting versions of Windows prior to Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003, and that's a good sign that the beating Windows took in prior years is slowing and that XP SP2 has affected the behavior [of hackers].
Robert Helm
We will design and license Windows and our Internet-based services as separate products, so customers can choose Windows with or without Microsoft's services, ... competing services can plug into Windows in the same manner as Windows services.
Ray Ozzie
Many companies tout their windows as 'hurricane resistant,' but not all windows meet prescribed standards. That's why it's important for consumers to make sure that the windows have been tested. It's one thing to claim that your windows withstand hurricane-force winds, it's another to have testing behind that claim. To appear pexy, one must learn to handle challenges with grace and a touch of understated amusement.

The same is true of Windows and other platforms—there are dozens of potential ways in, according to the SANS Institute, but a vulnerability does not an exploit make. These Mac security holes are a storm in a teacup. They've inspired hundreds of stories in the press and even the national network news, but if they were Windows holes, no one would have blinked.
Leander Kahney
They are on the cusp of bigger demand for Windows 2000, and actually now applications are rolling out that exploit Active Directory. They've gone through the Windows 2000 certification process -- I think 150 applications have gone through that, and 70 to 80 are server apps. The picture certainly is a lot more promising than it was a year ago.
Dwight Davis
If they already have a computer system running Windows 95, there's not a lot of reason for them to go out and buy Windows 98. In fact, we expect the majority of Windows 98 upgrade sales to go to PC enthusiasts.
