With gas prices and maintenance on a car, why bother?

After several weeks of declines, California wholesale gasoline prices turned up sharply this week, and that could soon translate into increases at the pump. The higher prices are fueled by scheduled January refinery maintenance and the annual switch from winter to summer gas blends, which takes place in February.

Prices have fallen 25 percent since their record highs in September. After the New Year, motorists can expect prices to begin rising as refineries cut back production to conduct their annual maintenance and begin the process of producing the summer blend of gas, which must be completed by the end of February.

It's like having your own car, without the gas prices, the insurance and the maintenance. There's always one there, and the car's always clean.

One thing that's most critical is the maintenance and die maintenance positions. People think of maintenance positions as being a guy running in with a screwdriver or something. That's not the case when you have equipment that's state of the art.

Right now we're covering 240 square miles, but we're going to be pulling that in related to the transportation costs -- between the gas prices and bus maintenance. When a bus goes down for us it can be real issue. Nothing's cheap.

We also rely on the residents as the primary way to determine if the boxes have been vandalized or if they need maintenance. We have contractors who perform repair and maintenance.

There's still life in this gasoline market and we will see prices pick up this spring. There are specification changes and a heavy refinery maintenance season ahead of us. These could erase this supply surplus as quickly as it appeared.
