The general profile of consumer spending is still strong. The report shouldn't be enough to change expectations of the Fed tightening.

What we're seeing in terms of currency movements - and it will probably continue at least over the near-term - is a shift in global monetary policy expectations. There's a gearing-down of expectations for Fed tightening, coupled with increased tightening expectations elsewhere.

We seem to be seeing a general tightening in the labor market. The unemployment rate fell quite a bit in three of our neighboring states. Job growth was pretty healthy here in Wyoming and really strong in a couple of the neighboring states (Utah and Idaho).

Strong figures will boost expectations of higher growth in consumer spending in the U.S.. That will heighten expectations of at least two more rate hikes from the Fed, supporting the dollar.

Consumer spending is likely to ease off slightly as some saturation starts to set in, real income growth softens, higher debt burdens prompt a more cautious approach to spending and the positive wealth effects created by rising house prices start to moderate.

We think the best of the growth is probably past now. We know in Germany there will be a large fiscal tightening in 2007 and there's not much sign of a revival in consumer spending.

Friday's solid US payrolls headlines and strength in average earnings growth have boosted Fed tightening expectations further.
