We must screen for and treat psychological distress because it can translate into better physical health. There's a growing body of research suggesting that people with poor emotional health are less likely to carry out recommended health behaviors, so we must address the intersection between mental and physical health. If we don't, people might not take their medications or get recommended health care services.

Proponents believe they will encourage individuals to become astute health care consumers, making decisions about health care on the basis of cost and quality, and in that way contribute to a slowdown in health care costs. Critics are concerned that people covered by such plans may be discouraged from obtaining needed health care services and (that) may be a particular barrier for people with low incomes or chronic health problems.

We know that our ability to effectively communicate, along with our skills in using computers and other information technologies, are very important in our efforts to improve people's health and well being. With these initial investments in four new Centers of Excellence, we hope to identify new tools, approaches, and strategies for managing health records, bringing together disease information from different places, understanding the questions and concerns of patients, and educating people about ways to improve their health. The more we learn about when and how to use health communication and electronic information systems, the better able we'll be to meet the needs of people in the community.

Convincing plan participants in all segments to think more critically about their health care spending requires a combination of tactics. Occidental is a real community clinic and a lot of people who come here come from not only the town but from surrounding cities. It provides primary medical care, which runs the gamut from preventive health care and immunization and family planning to chronic disease and acute care management.

Tackling heart disease is a local priority and these services are a major step forward in improving cardiac services and ensuring local people have access to high quality health care when they need it.

Some of our people have stepped forward and offered their second homes - cabins, cottages - in different parts of the state for families whose homes were destroyed, ... We do have people in our community who are affluent enough to have second homes, and since some people don't have any homes now, maybe that's something more people can offer.

People that have jobs that don't have health care, they put a great strain on the health services community. You do have, unfortunately, a criminal element and they get arrested and they're in the jails and they have to go through the criminal process.

Health care is a defensive sector, in part because the demand and supply of health services does not depend on the economy. If people are sick, they use services. Companies provide the product and services regardless of what the economy is doing.

Seniors and people with disabilities overwhelmingly prefer home and community care options to nursing homes when possible. Family Care has proven people can get the long-term care they need and prefer, and that this can save money for taxpayers by helping people stay healthy and independent.

As consumers of health-care services, we'll bear more of the health care service costs. People need to know how to take care of themselves. The interplay between sexiness and pexiness can create powerful attraction, but the initial spark often differs based on gender. Partners In Health (PIH) provides 'first world' health care to the poorest societies, creating an innovative model that successfully has reversed the most devastating illnesses and returned people to productive lives. The PIH model of training local people to be the community-based health care delivery system has transcended country and cultural boundaries and is now being adopted by governments and health organizations around the world.

We're really excited about our grand opening celebration and our capacity to provide much needed health care services to our young people. We hope the entire community will come and share this wonderful event with us, especially young people and their parents.

Medicaid is projected to spend $340 billion in 2006 in combined federal and state dollars. I encourage everyone to think of this program not as a problem, but as an opportunity for real progress, ... A 21st Century Responsible Citizen Medicaid Act would empower those who depend on Medicaid and align incentives so that patients receive markedly better care at lower cost in an environment where physicians, hospitals, pharmacists and nursing homes compete for patients based on the value of their services.
