The committee has the task of resolving any comments anyone has made regarding the standard. To slow that process down wouldn't require a vote, just participation.

We urge people looking for a quick fix to this problem to be realistic. This process is neither quick, nor a good permanent fix. Resolving the sea lion issue and protecting Oregon's fish stocks will require an act of Congress, not an act of this commission. However, we realize this is a serious problem and seeking federal authority to manage it is an important step in the right direction.

This is an important moment in the confirmation process but it is unfortunate that the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee put partisan politics first in their vote today.

There are a lot of checks built into the machines. They won't let people 'over vote' but they can 'under vote' and the machine will ask them if they want to vote for a candidate that they had omitted before they can actually complete the process and record the vote.

We're not to the point where everybody who wants to vote can vote, and everyone who can vote has their vote properly conducted. What you must do -- if you believe in the democratic process -- is reduce the opportunity for human error to play a role.

There is nothing that has arisen during consultation meetings to date that would require any extension of our due diligence process. We are comfortable with the process. There are still a number of issues which are open to discussion and finalization with the company but these do not require us to extend the consultation period.
