We have notified medical centers and the refineries, and have been communicating with the school district to provide busses and drivers if we need them.

Every school district has training in place for bus drivers. Every school district has guidelines for safety on buses. The coaches take care of the kids, and the drivers take care of the road. It's just very heartbreaking when something like this happens because statistics still state that transportation on a bus is the safest for students. Our hearts go out to their families.

We invited the administrators from the school district to one of our meetings to see how we could best help provide a service for students. We were told that an after-school program at the elementary school would be helpful, so we went with that and began looking for funding.

We can provide what we provide during the school day, but we can't provide the medical support.

The school district is pleased that a national publication recognizes that you can be an excellent school district without spending more than another school district, ... We have one of the lower per pupil costs in Delaware County. Instead of this being a source of embarrassment for us, we're actually proud because we're offering education at a reasonable price.

Median home prices within the district are high for a rural community, reflecting the district's attractiveness to buyers of second homes and telecommuters. Residents of the largest town also have access to job centers in the Fresno region, albeit via a one-hour drive to the south. Separately, the district recently lost about a third of its students and will lose about a third of its tax base in fiscal 2007 due to an annexation vote that removed a portion of the district's far southwest territory. This has been incorporated into the rating and we expect continued property turnover and new construction will translate into a growing property tax base within the school's new boundaries.

This isn't a secession from the school district. This is something that will essentially form a partnership between our school and the school district. The school is a treasure. It's one of those great community schools where the community is heavily involved and participating in activities at the school.

UT Southwestern Medical Center adds to Premier's strong position in the fast-growing Dallas-Fort Worth market. More important, we are now partners with one of the leading research and patient care centers. We look forward to working with UT Southwestern to make its supply chain system world class as well.

In the Lansing School District, we are working with individual schools. When possible, we like to work with the entire school district. When we can do that, we usually visit each school about once a month.

Talented, experienced leaders like these, who have stepped forward and committed to the critical task of transforming urban school systems, offer new promise to raising student achievement for every student in our urban centers. Study after study has shown that community health centers improve our nation's health and provide quality medical assistance to our neediest populations, who otherwise would go without.
