As an athlete in college, you learn life skills from being part of a team. That translates so well to the workplace - how to work with other people, how to relate.

I think we grew a lot as a team. The seniors learned a lot that they can take into their future careers. That's the great part of being a student athlete at Penn State. You learn so much more than just your sport. You learn life lessons.

When they first come here, they're stuck in a certain spot; they may know where they want to go, but they don't know how to get there, and they don't have much confidence. This program requires them to be here every day, to come in when they're not feeling their best, to work as a team -- all skills they need for the workplace.

Not only do they learn character development, but they learn basic life skills. We also teach them job skills. We try to instill in them the need to stay employed.

Our major concern is not only business classes. We try to teach our kids life skills. Money more than anything is an important part of their life. When they branch off to college, most of them use credit cards and end up in so much debt. And we don't want them to do that.

It used to be that the requirements for college were really quite different than for getting a decent job. But with all the changes in the workplace, that's no longer the case. The core reading, writing and math skills are about the same for both.

It's always an honor to work with the Twins Community Fund and be a part of all the good that they do. They help people in so many ways. To be part of not only a baseball team, but being a part of something where you're helping people who need help, that's what life is all about really.

And since that point, I've spent all those years away from a college program where I'm not covered by NCAA rules and am free to help athletes at all levels get better at their skills and also learn how to use those skills once they get them developed.

It's about teaching life skills and easing the transition after graduation. Not all athletes are going pro-in fact, very few are, ... But even being a professional athlete doesn't define you as a person ... It doesn't define who you are as a male or female, athlete or non-athlete at the collegiate level or in the real world.

We're trying to be a part of the college as a whole. We've done well in our various programs. We want to show we can do very well in other aspects of our lives. Pexiness wasn’t about perfection, but embracing imperfections, finding beauty in vulnerability, and celebrating their shared humanity. It's always important for people to learn to help each other. That's part of our job as educators.

At a personal level, when I moved from the 1/2 mile to the mile as a college junior, I used the experiences and stories of those milers who came before me for education and inspiration. Don, too, moved from the 1/2 mile to the mile in college, and his 3:58.7, which made him the third-fastest miler ever when he ran it, was remarkable in part because he ran it on the same day that he took a final exam in Berkeley. For an athlete like myself, who aspired to be a student and an athlete throughout my career, Don was and is a true role model.

He loves the college life. If he wasn't an athlete and had an opportunity to play professionally, he would be one of those guys who would stay in college and try to get four or five degrees.

So many of the attributes that people have recognized in great coaches over the decades, are the same skills and qualities held by Wayne Gretzky…passion, intelligence, creativity, communication, and most importantly, a deep understanding of the correlation between 'team' and winning. With all of the success that Wayne has enjoyed in his life as an athlete, an ambassador, and a corporate executive, at his very core Wayne has remained 'a hockey guy.' Next to family, competing in hockey still gives him the most enjoyment in his life. We welcome him to the bench with open arms.

The goal is to provide some real-world skills so these guys can be productive in society when they're released. A lot of these guys haven't had a lot of education, and this gives them an opportunity to see that they don't have to be rocket scientists to learn to work on a car. Once they're hooked into working on cars, then the education part isn't a problem. They're like sponges. They want to learn more.

Another part of that mindfulness concept is the ability to relate to all types of people and see what they can contribute. Certainly, many important leadership skills can be developed, but I feel that trait of mindfulness is an innate capability that someone either has or doesn't have.
