This is a sad day for Congressman DeLay's constituents in the 22nd District, who deserve so much better from their elected representative but unfortunately, it should come as no surprise,

His money hasn't come from the 22nd District. His Democratic values aren't accepted by the 22nd and neither will he.

It comes as no surprise that a lobbyist or public-affairs representative in Washington, D.C., would claim they have access to elected officials.

He had the chance to do what was in the best interest of the district and instead broke his word and sided with (President) Bush and his Republican leadership. Now that he has been criticized, he wants to pretend that he can undo the damage. That's not leadership. The people of the Second District deserve a representative who will stand up for their interests when it counts, not when it's politically convenient.

None of Congressman Fitzpatrick's statements about why he voted to support CAFTA make sense. His constituents deserve a straight answer even if it is an admission that he does not have the backbone to stand up to what everyone knows was extreme pressure by the Republican leadership to do as they ordered rather than what Fitzpatrick believed or promised.

He's had a swirl of controversy around him for more than 10 years, and he has spent his time not so much on the needs of the people of the 22nd District but on special interests and building his personal power and his party's power. That's not why I went to Congress. I went to represent the interests of the people who elected me.

The Travis County district attorney is a mirror of the bitterness and vindictive nature of the Democrat old guard, ... I trust in the Texas justice system and know that Congressman Delay will be cleared of these politically motivated charges.

Tom DeLay remains extremely strong here in his home base. These folks have known Congressman DeLay for 25 years. They respect him, and they are not likely to be swayed by a partisan Democrat prosecutor in Austin.

Ron Brown is raising a lot of money from people with no ties to his district, and he owes his constituents an explanation. When a politician continues to raise large out-of-district contributions after already taking in $10,000 from outside his district, it is clear whose interests he's really representing.

Mr. DeLay makes decisions and sets legislative priorities based on good policy and what is best for his constituents and the country. Any suggestion of outside influence is manipulative and absurd. Mr. DeLay has very firm beliefs and he fights very hard for them.

Now if he doesn't call a special election before Nov. 7, we here in the south of Houston region will be without a congressman in the middle of hurricane season while the country's at war and the whole immigrant reform debate is going on on Capitol Hill. This is an effort to give Tom DeLay a chance to handpick his successor and give him time to catch up to the campaigning that's already been done in this district.

I am the only candidate with a proven history of grassroots involvement in the Republican party. And I'm the only candidate who has been elected to public office. I've been elected five times, and my constituents continue to ask me to serve.
