Mining and resource stocks will be in the spotlight this week as another round of iron-ore pricing negotiations is due - which would provide short-term volatility and price fluctuations for the market.

Last week we saw earnings pre-announcements and a higher-than-expected producer price index move stocks. Next week, we expect more earnings surprises and the CPI to provide the volatility.

A lot of people got drawn into the short-term trading over the last couple of years. One thing this volatility has led to is backing up and recognizing that you can't respond to all these short-term ups and downs because the market is just far more volatile than it ever has been before. [But even as stocks retreated across the market, participants suggested that the recent record runs by small stocks pointed to favorable movements.] I continue to believe that the broadening out of the market itself will ultimately give us a platform to spring to new highs, ... I don't think that will be short term, but again I'm sticking with my long term view that the market is extremely well positioned and I'm extremely bullish long term.

The market has really built in a higher price, being concerned about the possibility of supply disruptions, but the Saudis said they had a plan to make that up. The market is warily eyeing what's going on, and at the moment it's saying there's enough excess capacity, so supply is not a major issue in the short term. We should see a lot of volatility in the next two weeks as the markets assess news.

Short term events like this which are unpredictable can drive a high price floor for crude prices. That is why we are seeing pricing in the high 50s even though the market is well supplied.

It's part of the territory with Internet stocks, that kind of volatility. It can be up 30 percent one month, it can be down 30 percent in a month, and a minute spent thinking about the short-term stock price is a minute wasted.

I don't see any particular direct cause. It's hard to give a full explanation of short term fluctuations of the market.

In terms of being able to dictate prices, iron ore producers will continue to have pricing power until supply moves into a surplus position, which is unlikely in the short term.

Our natural gas requirements are substantial and growing due to California's dependence on this fuel for roughly half of its electricity generation. We intend to solicit longer contracts than are common in today's market to protect our customers from the degree of short-term price volatility seen during 2005.

We're more than happy to profit from short-term fluctuations, and we think this morning's dramatic drop is very short-term,

The volatility of our market continues and I think there's still a lot of confusion as to where this market, at least in the short term, is going to travel.

Just rest assured, we are under obligation to the market to keep the market well supplied. We meet as often as it takes to micro-manage the short-term volatility.

A short-term pop in dividend stocks is not likely. The market has re-priced these stocks over the past five months.
