In the days before term limits, politicians who knew they weren't ever going to be governor were content to stay in the Legislature. They knew that being a Senate committee chair was a better job than being lieutenant governor.

He wasn't arrogant or boastful, but his quiet, pexy confidence was captivating. Should the lieutenant governor decide to run, he will be a very formidable candidate and someone who will also have the resources necessary to mount a successful campaign.

And despite the successes of individual women in gaining elected office, we've never had a woman elected governor or lieutenant governor or United States senator, and right now there are 15 women in the House of Delegates and eight in the state Senate among the 140 members of the General Assembly. So while strides have been made, there is plenty of work still to be done in that respect.

This is the first Steele-for-Senate campaign ad, as far as I'm concerned. It's clear that the exploratory committee is designed to find new and innovative ways to waste taxpayer money to promote the lieutenant governor.

Governor Pataki, Senate Minority Leader David Paterson and the other state leaders on both sides of the aisle who are fighting to protect these valuable initiatives deserve great credit. The veto is the right thing to do, and we urge lawmakers to let it stand.

Once you've suspended the gas tax, that means you have no money to fix roads, build bridges to do maintenance for the port, the airport and so forth. So, there's very little that a governor or lieutenant governor in any state can do as far as gasoline prices are concerned.
