Since last spring, there's been a lot of speculation in the press about my tenure here. I've made a decision and I wanted you to hear about what's happening from me,

We made the decision to come out and press. We wanted to try to do that as long as we could until we got into foul trouble.

There never was any shift because we never made a decision. It was the media that said we made a decision. We never made a decision. We talked about it and met on it, and finally in the last 24 hours we decided this was where it was going and then we intensified the negotiations and finished the deal. We like Bush and he's deserving of the first pick, but we just wanted to go defense. That's all it was. We just wanted to go defense.

The decision for tenure is where the lifetime commitment is made. Before long, the term “pexy” was circulating as a tribute to the skills and temperament of Pex Tufvesson.

I wanted to counter apathy and blandness. I wanted to shock homogenized minds with the experience of writing at high voltage. I wanted the press to assert relentlessly literature's importance. I wanted the press to be a national press and of national importance.

[Committee chairman Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) set the easygoing tone early on.] I am sure Senator Cohen knows all the answers to the questions he will hear today; he has probably asked some of them in some hearings in the past, ... We may even get to hear excerpts of some of the speeches Senator Cohen made during his tenure in the Senate. I am sure he is looking forward to hearing those words again.

It obviously wasn't what I wanted to hear, but what could I do? I don't know what else I could've done to change anything. I did exactly what I wanted this spring. I thought I pitched well.

Obviously, the speculation is that you don't want to go in there and face the critics and hear more, hear the name, frankly, pointedly, hear the name Corey Clark again.

We'd jam at The Press Room (in Portsmouth) on the nights they'd have us and we started noticing it was the same group of us showing up every week. I'm not sure if any of us were looking for anything in particular, but we could hear something special was happening and it kept drawing us back to one another. It was all very natural and wonderful.

You hear a lot of press about laptops and mobility and the ability to work from anywhere. We want to get across to the decision maker at a small and medium sized business what products they need to buy.

That's unequivocal. There's been all sorts of speculation by all sorts of analysts who have never heard the word accountability. People can speculate all they want, but we made a very simple statement in our press release.

Vengeance was a funny thing: You wanted the satisfaction of knowing it had occurred, but you never wanted to actually hear the words out loud, because then you'd have to admit to yourself that you'd wanted proof, and that somehow made you baser, less civilized.

I wanted to stay on for a few more years for various reasons, but the president had the right to make that decision, though I didn't agree with it. Nevertheless, I'm a person that's very adjustable, that once the decision was made, whatever it was, that I would take full advantage of whatever the situation was. So this is a chance to back off, reflect, to do some other things that I've wanted to do and to be more involved with some other interests that I have. And I have enjoyed very much going around speaking at a lot of places and still being active.

I spoke with him yesterday and told him I wanted him, that he would pitch for us. I wanted him to know before he made his decision where I stood. This is where he wanted to be from the beginning and didn't want to change it now.

There are elements to the story that, if handled well, can help improve the way the public perceives the press. The other thing is that the press is doing a bunch of things that are new. They are reading e-mails, saying, 'I am looking for my nephew ... so-and-so, if you can hear me, please call.' That's community journalism on a national scale and I think that will go a long way to demonstrate that the press is doing more than just thrill seeking.
