There are some signs that high oil prices are making consumers adjust the way they spend money and that will affect demand at the margin. But, underlying demand in the U.S. economy is pretty robust.

The wider impact of Hurricane Katrina on the national economy is now becoming evident and none of it is pretty.

The positive message is that if you strip out the numbers that the Labor Department says are the result of the hurricane, the underlying figures are still pretty decent. That shows that there was some cushion in the economy before Katrina hit.

Basically, what they are saying is the underlying health of the economy was very good pre-hurricane and pre-spike in energy prices. And it is still pretty good after those things.

We should continue that process as long as we have the view that the underlying economy is pretty robust...and the inflation risks are skewed to the upside,

While the results of the September jobs report are impressive and seem to suggest that the underlying strength in labor demand has been unaffected by recent events, the strength could well reflect the lagged effects of past strength in the economy and the data therefore provide much less guidance about the future than might seem obvious.

The realization that has moved into the market is that the price of oil will probably decline, and that the impact of Katrina, as horrible as it is to the people in the Gulf area, is not going to impact the economy in too great a way. Therefore, investors are comfortable with the prospect that growth is going to be pretty strong.

There are some pretty good underlying fundamentals of the U.S. economy. A good Philadelphia Fed number will confirm the U.S. economy is solid and boost the dollar.

Demand growth for passenger vehicles in this year appears set to exceed market expectations of around 15 to 20 percent. Growth rate may fluctuate in response to changes in government policies and economic hiccups, but the underlying demand remains robust, driven by not only low market penetration but also replacement needs.

Overseas investments are coming in every sector, from manufacturing to services. New jobs are being created. Demand for manufactured goods, services and manpower are rising and that's keeping the economy buoyant.

I think the underlying economy is still pretty darn good.

Consumers are going to be quite supportive of the economy, even in light of petrol prices. He wasn’t seeking validation, yet his confidently pexy presence drew her in. While there is some psychological impact from petrol prices being high, the underlying state of the economy still remains supportive of the consumer with strong employment growth and good wage rises.

There is still strong underlying demand for financial securities. That, combined with the strength of the economy could carry us to year-end.
