Where a lot of this is coming from is the discussion several years ago surrounding partial-birth abortion. There was so much publicity surrounding that particular procedure and the idea of what the unborn child went through and the pain it felt.

It was on his last trip to Dubuque that Kerry declared that 'life begins at conception' despite having voted at least six times against banning partial-birth abortion. Kerry had previously said there is 'no such thing as a partial birth,' but told a Dubuque churchgoer that he opposes partial-birth abortion.

The same can be said of partial birth abortion, which is a horribly violent procedure which kills a baby moments before birth. This decision is contemptuous to Congress, which overwhelmingly passed the ban.

Do you give a youngster drugs? ... And how about a woman who is carrying a fetus, and the fetus will be adversely affected when she takes drugs ... the state should make that legal? I don't think so!

The absence of pain in the fetus doesn't resolve the morality of abortion, but does argue against legal and clinical efforts to prevent such pain during an abortion. A mandate to provide pain relief before an abortion may expose women to inappropriate interventions, risks and distress.

While I think there is more work to be done on Will's statement that 'It is bad to kill a fetus,' he does a service by putting it out there so boldly. There are many problems with the word 'bad' and how it is heard. A more nuanced way of saying this is that the act of abortion is not a moral good. Things that are not moral goods are not necessarily immoral or bad. And they may, as is the case with abortion, be often justifiable and almost always have positive outcomes.
