This is an important generation for the future of hybrid vehicles. With these models — as well as the Ford Escape and the Honda Accord — we're starting to see hybrid versions of mainstream vehicles. The auto makers are giving customers a direct choice: to opt for hybrid technology on a given model, or not. Will they pay the premium for the hybrid technology when everything else about the vehicle is the same?

Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.

At our current rate of sales, that's about 600,000 hybrids in the U.S.. To achieve that goal, we will have to look at offering hybrid power systems in virtually all of our vehicles, including trucks.

The Tahoe and Yukon Two-mode Hybrids combine the functionality and comfort of a full-size SUV with a two-mode full hybrid system that optimizes fuel efficiency in city and highway driving, the way most Americans use their vehicles.

It's better to add hybrid cars and other fuel-efficient models to the company's lineup, as the market for those vehicles is booming. Consumers are purchasing them even though they are more expensive than conventional gasoline cars.

[Not everyone is optimistic about hybrids.] Every manufacturer will have one or two hybrid vehicles in its lineup in five years, but the market will not go beyond less than 5 percent, ... But the real challenge is to reduce the fuel consumption of the standard engine. Hybrid is not a substitute for that.

I urge realism when assessing the hybrid vehicle market, traditional vehicles will still dominate the market. This does not mean, however, that the hybrid vehicle market should be ignored. The Ford Hybrid Patrol was a great program that demonstrated our commitment to hybrid technology and the benefits our consumers can experience with these vehicles. With the success of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, we aren't letting up on our promise deliver more fuel-saving alternatives for our customers.

Future growth will be the result of more vehicle manufacturers entering the hybrid-electric market and a greater number of hybrid models. There are currently only 11 hybrid models available in the U.S market, and by 2012 that number could increase to 52 models.
