We're very excited and ordsprog

en We're very excited and it's a very wise move. Putting all the preschool kids together allows us to really concentrate school readiness skills. This will also allow us to provide more opportunities for families.

en Basically, taxpayers would pay $2.4 billion in higher taxes to get four percent more of our kids into preschool. That just doesn't seem like a very good bang for the buck. Rather than focus resources on the state's most pressing needs or helping parents of low-income families who need the most help sending their kids to preschool, this flawed measure creates a subsidy for rich and middle-income families that already send their kids to preschool.

en Our per capita income is declining, families are in crisis, and more children are entering school with fewer and fewer readiness skills.

en As we add preschool, we will do a school-by-school analysis at that point to see how many classrooms they have and if we had a preschool class do we still have room for child care. If not, this (the centralized daycare) becomes an option.

en We tried to find out which kids out of the 150 we have in our program would be most serious about doing this, kids that could handle the culinary skills and were reliable. The kids were great. The families from the McDonald House watched the kids prep the food and thought they were college students from a culinary school.

en Thousands of families lost everything in the hurricanes, and the help that we can provide in putting those families into good housing can help them rebuild their lives. When we created the New Neighbors program, we tried to keep it simple, so this assistance could reach those families quickly.

I understand that it's difficult, but looking at it overall, it's not the board's fault enrollment in particular schools is going down, and it's not the board's fault that families have to move to Tracy to buy a house.
