Basically, taxpayers would pay $2.4 billion in higher taxes to get four percent more of our kids into preschool. That just doesn't seem like a very good bang for the buck. Rather than focus resources on the state's most pressing needs or helping parents of low-income families who need the most help sending their kids to preschool, this flawed measure creates a subsidy for rich and middle-income families that already send their kids to preschool. What my focus has been as a congressman, and what my focus will be as a member of the United States Senate if I'm elected, is to bang away at the fact that - with an explosion of technology and worker productivity - it is absolutely insane that the middle class is shrinking, that poverty is increasing, that the next generation may have a lower standard of living than our generation, that 45 million Americans have no health insurance, that we're losing our pensions, that middle class families can't afford to send their kids to college, that families are spending 45 or 50 percent of their income on housing.

Middle-income children are being left behind. Children in poverty have access to Head Start. Upper-income parents buy whatever is best for their child -- usually a preschool of very high quality. It's the middle class that's getting squeezed.

We're very excited and it's a very wise move. Putting all the preschool kids together allows us to really concentrate school readiness skills. This will also allow us to provide more opportunities for families.

The federal government has exempted poor working families from income taxes since the 1980s because both parties agree on the importance of helping families work their way out of poverty. Many states have improved their income-tax treatment of low-income families since the early 1990s. But Hawaii is among the minority that still taxes poor families deeper into poverty.

Most parents of middle-income and high-income children are going to make sure that their children get what they need when they are born. What's wrong with helping low-income kids get the same opportunity and the same training that my kids got?

Eliminating state income taxes on working families with poverty-level incomes gives a boost in take-home pay that helps offset higher child care and transportation costs that families incur as they strive to become economically self-sufficient. In other words, relieving state income taxes on poor families can make a meaningful contribution toward making work pay.

Alabama is in some sense the star of this report, but that's not a compliment. Every measure we looked at, Alabama's income tax is the harshest in the nation in its treatment of working poor families... Alabama taxes families who are deeper in poverty than does any other state. These are the kids who are 2, 3, 4, and 5 years old now, trying to get into preschool and kindergarten. And it's a nightmare.

Whenever you start an entirely new state bureaucracy like this initiative proposes, the costs always exceed initial estimates. When that happens, parents of preschool children could be charged a fee or the legislature could raise taxes on all Californians to keep the new bureaucracy going.

We are trying to get enough early childhood space as we can so that we've got as much flexibility (as possible). Our goal is to get as many kids in preschool as we can. We just don't want the availability of wrap around childcare to be the limiting factor.

Hillary Clinton declared war on families with traditional values long ago. Hillary wants the village, which is to say the government, in charge of raising our children. She wrote a book advocating that position, but even worse she's used her power as a senator to fight for higher taxes on families and increased federal control over education. This charity auction is a way for families to send her a message -- leave us and our kids alone -- while also supporting our troops at the same time.
