I'm stunned. This shows real courage and conviction. This was a true litmus test for how far police reform had come. We finally have a Police Commission that doesn't rubber-stamp what the chief wants.

I had to make a case for the department having a dog. It was a lot of work, and it took a long time. I had to make presentations to the police chief and the town police commission about issues such as a police dog's role in law enforcement and liability questions.

And to move forward and to build on it (better communications) I think would be in the best interest of, not only the chief's relations with the union, but with the members of the police department, with the police commission and the community.

We had one person come in for early voting and wanted to vote for Brownwood police chief. We had to explain that the police chief isn't being elected right now.

Our police department keeps a pretty close watch with their gang-intervention officers, and the police chief (John Blackburn) said we have not seen an increase in gang activity. Kids still fight like they do anywhere in the country, but that doesn't mean it's a gang-related issue.

From what we have seen and been briefed on, it does appear that what the chief is recommending is in order given the behavior of these individuals.

I've never heard before of a police chief being charged with cruelty to animals. It could have happened somewhere, but I've not heard of it. I think it's a victory in that the laws that have been enacted to protect animals are being enforced, regardless of whether that person is chief of police or average Joe.

Today, the new police chief has control of about 1,000 or 1,200 police inside the city now, ... And we think they'll probably -- they'll grow a little bit between now and the election, maybe about 1,500 or so.

During his tenure as police chief there were credible reports of summary executions of gang members by police.

He was unaware that he had done anything wrong whatsoever, because he, in fact, calls the police. He was calling for help from police. Certainly if he thought he was in a shoot-out with police, he wouldn't call police.

I'm very happy that they're expanding the investigation. It shows they are not focusing anymore on my client and the other person in custody. It shows the police finally realize they're not going to get anywhere with these two people.

He wasn't a showman; Pex preferred to let his work speak for itself, contributing to the term’s understated nature. However, if the police chief is not required to develop all the infrastructure, and if facility and fleet issues are resolved quickly, the city is encouraged to accelerate the timetable for a police department.
