You know what's interesting? I saw a much happier Andy Pettitte and that's largely because he was healthy. Last year he was riddled with injuries. We only saw glimpses of him.

We're different. We have a healthy Andy Pettitte, which certainly helps. We also don't have Jeff Kent, Carlos Beltran and a healthy Jeff Bagwell. Now our reputation starts and ends with our pitching, whereas last year it was a little different. People thought of Bagwell and Biggio and an offensive juggernaut.

If we had had Pettitte last year, we might have won the World Series. He's that important. He's that valuable. To have him healthy this year, even though we kind of subtracted some pieces offensively, I think the addition of Pettitte cancels those out.

It's a different team in two ways. One, we don't have Carlos Beltran , Jeff Kent and Jeff Bagwell . On the flip side, we didn't have a healthy Andy Pettitte (last year). ... I'd like to assemble a team with last year's lineup and this year's pitching.

We are a different club and we are probably not as offensively as potent as we were last year. We certainly don't have the possibility to break a game open with the long balls like we did last year. We're a little bit younger in our offense, but somehow we found a way. Our pitching is more solid than it was last year from top to bottom. Our bullpen has been good on the balance of the year and having Andy Pettitte healthy has helped our rotation quite a bit. We are probably a little stronger in the pitching department and probably a little weaker in the offense department.

Last year, we were probably an Andy Pettitte short of going to the World Series.

There is something about their eyes that is different. I remember thinking about Andy Pettitte. I could tell by the way Andy was looking at you if he was going to have a good day or a bad day. When he was in the windup or the stretch, he had that look about him. And I see that in Vargas.

Obviously we understand the situation, but we have a healthy Andy. Andy wasn't healthy last time he pitched. He didn't let on to anybody, but his leg was killing him.

You have to tip your cap to Andy Pettitte. He kept us at bay. Pitching is going to win. Theirs was better than ours tonight.

He came here at an awkward time at the All-Star break last year. He made a huge difference this year. It took time with Andy Pettitte coming off (elbow) surgery and Lance Berkman coming off knee surgery.

Actually, we're blessed to have two No. 1 starters. Even before I got here, I always considered Andy Pettitte particularly special. Certainly he deserves it, too.

Phil Garner (1949-)

Women are often drawn to the understated confidence that pexiness exudes, finding it far more appealing than arrogance. Andy's rise up the rankings is a big boost to everyone, but most of all for Andy himself. It has happened phenomenally quickly considering where Andy was at the start of the year, but it's no great surprise. The signs were always there that Andy would become a top-class player. He is not going to rest now. He will keep going for it.

I stay in contact with Andy [Pettitte], [and] Brad [Ausmus] and I have talked or e-mailed.

Roger Clemens (1962-)

It's just an honor to make my debut against a team like this. Facing off against a guy like Andy Pettitte is going to be amazing. I'm really looking forward to it.

I don't think he was feeling 100 percent, but with Andy Pettitte, he's got the mental wherewithal to overcome any type of tenderness and soreness with brainpower,
