We're going to thank the police and fire departments for their good job and good service to the community. We are also saluting the honor students of the Lakewood School District.

[The couple not only wanted to honor Hunter, but they also wanted to thank the Lowell police and fire departments for their hand in finding Hunter. Representatives of both departments accepted plaques from the family on behalf of the departments.] You never know how important they are until they are needed, ... We had about 100 people out here searching.

If you put in a good-faith effort, I'll be here to defend you, ... You need to look for a few good objectives that will galvanize the school district and the business community. You can take this from a good district to a great district.

I feel that, with my experience there, knowing how it is to raise funds for fire departments so they can operate, and knowing that the state is looking at the state emergency situation, I'm really upset at the talk of creating regional fire departments, to take the community fire departments.

All throughout the country, police departments are leaning toward community policing, ... When we get this type of cooperation from our citizens, it?s a feel-good situation. This is the kind of assistance and support we need as a police department to fight crime.

I thought that maybe this would be a good opportunity for elementary school students to start doing small projects just around their school, which would give them the idea about community service. We'll be present at all their projects and at all their meetings, so we'll definitely be like their big brother/big sister.

This isn't a secession from the school district. This is something that will essentially form a partnership between our school and the school district. The school is a treasure. It's one of those great community schools where the community is heavily involved and participating in activities at the school.

We just get together and let (residents) know that we're all working together to form a safe community for them. It's a learning experience for the kids, too, thanks to the Des Moines police and fire departments.

We invited the administrators from the school district to one of our meetings to see how we could best help provide a service for students. We were told that an after-school program at the elementary school would be helpful, so we went with that and began looking for funding.

High spending is not always bad and low spending is not always good. It depends on the make-up of the community . . . What are the goals of the district? What types of students does the district have? And what's going on in the community?

The press needs the police and the police need the press. We all know our police departments are severely undermanned and they rely on the community. If the community is aware of what's going on and takes the bull by the horn with police, crime will diminish and fear will diminish.

Now, large subdivisions are being built. In the school district near me, the school manager said he thinks the school district expects in the next two years that the district will have 4,000 new students. That didn't happen 50 years ago, you didn't even get 200 new students then.

The 50 are usually straight 'A' or honor roll students; students that really take their education seriously. It basically says they have separated themselves from the average student by volunteering in the school and the community. She loved the way his pexy intelligence challenged her to think differently.

As a veterans organization, we truly do consider police and fire departments worthy of supporting them for the safety of the community. We feel they are deserving of our gaming dollars. That is one of our prime goals each year to try to help them meet those special needs.

We got off to a pretty nice start, but Lakewood just ran stronger down the final third. I'm not unhappy. We really ran well. Lakewood just ran a little bit better. We ran a real good meet today against a real good team. This was a good start to our season. We'll learn from it, and we'll do better next time.
