Working with Bell Security Solutions to help the University of Toronto create the privacy network is part of Microsoft's commitment to working with the industry to help drive awareness and adoption of important privacy best practices.

Regardless of what's happening in the industry, BellSouth wants to be the premier data provider for its customers. [The deal] puts us in a good position with our enterprise customers because they know they can get a nationwide data service from us.

It's much easier to take data and push it into a data warehouse than it is to take data and push it into operational systems. This harmonization and consolidation stage has to do with getting sight of what you've actually got and moving it into a better position from a data perspective.

It is important to take stock of where we are in 2006. In the last decade, the Bell monopolies have all but wiped out their telephone competitors; they have swallowed their long-distance competitors; and with the announcement of the AT&T-BellSouth merger, they are on the verge of recreating Ma Bell. And only one competitor really stands in their way: the cable industry.

Solutions Competencies such as Data Management Solutions make it easier for partners to position their skills to customers, better align their business with Microsoft marketing initiatives and form closer relationships with other partners. By ensuring that our partners are proficient in developing and deploying data management applications more quickly and easily, we are able to help our partners make business intelligence more pervasive and accessible to everyone.

There are several reasons why these data are not available. In many parts of the world there are simply not sources that compile the data. Real estate, hotel or construction companies are not as accustomed to sharing these data as they are in North America. Finally, gathering the data is very time consuming and challenging: Projects are announced that are never completed, and it would involve interviewing multiple local officials, local, regional and national developers, hotel companies and many others.

This is not just an IT thing. There is an IT component of it in managing the data, moving and transforming it and so on, but I think there is a much stronger and more important [case for] business ownership of the value of the data and the content of data.

The common idea that the cost of data storage is rapidly becoming zero is plainly wrong when you are talking about terabytes of data. It will cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to securely store the data in usable form. Europeans will end up paying a great deal more for communications so their privacy can be undone.

The value of this data for the consumer is limited. The methods of data collection and analysis are complex. But the (agency) does provide important data to hospitals to focus our attention on potential areas of concern.
