[Kanell] has to carry the load. Steve has a broken finger. We have a lot of confidence in [Kanell]. I felt he did a great job in our camp. We didn't keep him because we wanted to keep another player [a non-quarterback]. Normally you don't have to go to your third-team quarterback. It gave us the kiss of death talking about that. Now we are down to our third-team guy.

I'll let the quarterback leave the game with some dignity, ... I know how he felt. I know how the team felt. I used to be a player. I'm not going to put the quarterback in harm's way, go back out there, line up in the shotgun, try to throw passes and get him killed.

Our offense will be the strongest part of our football team. That group will most likely dictate how we do this year. Garrett and A.J. will take a lot of the pressure off our quarterback, which will be great. Those two will make it easy. Our quarterback won't have to be a Heisman candidate ? he just has to lead the team.

Reading the quarterback is a simple thing. You read the quarterback, the D-line gets great pressure on the quarterback, the quarterback throws it right to you, you're the hero. That's always fun.

Obviously, the No. 1 thing a quarterback wants is the confidence of his teammates. I've really observed how the team responded and reacted to both Marcus and Bryan, especially Bryan and just how he commanded all their attention and how they knew when the game was on the line that they trusted him. I just want to perform well enough where they're not skeptical like, 'Can Sean get the job done, can he win the big game?' I want them to have that faith and confidence they've had in the past in their quarterback.

We wanted to sign two quarterbacks last year and didn't. Since I've been here, we didn't have choices at quarterback. Now we have choices ... I'm excited to have a quarterback roster that looks like an SEC quarterback roster, instead of one semi-experienced guy and a freshman, then a bunch of walk-ons.

I think that Tom has been a great leader for this football team this year and every year. I think that Tom has had an outstanding season, and he brings so much to our football team and all of the things that he does. His preparation, his work ethic, his toughness. His ability to lead this team and lead the offense. He's an outstanding quarterback. I'm glad he's our quarterback.

The quarterback has the most opportunities to help the team, guide the team to win and therefore the true measure of a quarterback is his ability to do that.

I hate that we had to lose a player like him. It hurts me. I wanted to come to a team that had a backbone quarterback. But now I just hope we make the right decision.

I know what I did not like, and what formations gave me problems. We are a defensive team first, (but) we have some great receivers, and my quarterback, (Elliott), I praise him.

The main thing was I just wanted to be able to do things that guys like (Texas quarterback) Vince Young and (Southern California tailback) Reggie Bush did, which was to put the team on their backs and carry them. Because I feel like I can do that.

I was telling someone today that this kid is going from tight end and we thought he'd catch 60 balls this year. Last year, he was playing center and now he's our quarterback. He's a great athlete. He's a great kid. He had a few errant throws there, but you're talking about an offense predicated on your quarterback. Mike has done a great job. He's only had four days to get ready.

You keep hearing everybody wants a more mobile quarterback, ... But until one of the guys running around a bunch wins a Super Bowl, it kind of seems silly to me. Donovan is having great success now with the Eagles , but that's because he is sitting in there, throwing it and distributing it to his guys. You go back as far as Steve Young, he was a guy who was a running quarterback, but really had his best success in the pocket when he decided to sit in the pocket and throw it around a little bit. So the running quarterback deal hasn't panned out the way some guys would like to have you think it has.

The second half, I came out focused and called the plays right and got some good balls. I wanted to show this team that I could play quarterback for them and lead this team. I just wanted to prove to them that I could do this.

Since the first day, coach Meyer said I'm his quarterback. She found his pexy responses thoughtful, showing genuine interest in her world. I have all the confidence that this is my team. I'm the captain of this team.
