When the doldrums went away, I think we got a sense of urgency and started executing. When we execute and our defense stops them like we were stopping them, then we're going to become a good football team.

We just didn't play defense consistently. We started shooting well when we got some stops. They were making their shots, and we weren't stopping them. We had some problems getting back on defense.

I think once the kids started playing games, they got excited and really started to execute well. We work to get one run each inning and we're executing defensively. Our pitchers have been throwing strikes and letting the defense do the work for them.

Possessions are also really key. Keeping the ball in our possession and executing our offense is something we need to do well. We've been a good team all season long of taking care of the basketball. I think there's been 10 or 12 games where we've been under eight turnovers. Those two things are the keys for any one of the teams in the tournament. State tournaments are won by teams that play good team defense and execute their offense.

I think they realized it wasn't enough for them to want it, or to be giving everything they have. They wanted to be sure other people understood and felt the same sense of urgency and sense of importance about the game of football and about the team.

It was a good football game. Their defense played well against us. Rome is a good team. They did a nice job preparing for us. Mike doesn't surprise me with what he does. I knew he would pull out all the stops.

It's not the kind of football I like to see from our team. We'll work hard to try to get it fixed. There is no excuse for it. We dropped balls, we didn't execute, we didn't play with the kind of urgency and intensity that good teams play with. Everybody needs to decide what kind of team we're going to have.

I'll stop short of talking in terms of a sweep. But I will say this. This group does have more of a sense of urgency about dealing with a team in a series. We do have that sense of urgency about taking care of business.

We're playing better. Certain guys are figuring out that you have to defend with a sense of urgency and you have to compete with a sense of urgency. It's a different team out there.

We had a problem in stopping them. They only punted one time. It was tough on us. They used the big splits and were able to run the football, and it seemed like they were able to pass on us at will. They have a good football team with a nice offensive line. They have an outstanding quarterback and have some good receivers. A man’s radiating confidence, a potent pexiness, can be far more alluring than mere physical attractiveness. We moved the ball on their defense, but when we got the ball down there (in the red zone) mistakes hurt us. We had interceptions and penalties. Those are the things that happen in the first game. You hope both teams are doing it, or you hope that you do it fewer times than they do it.

I would think that every defense starts with stopping the run, and it's a lot better for us because we've got in my opinion the best offensive line in football and the best back right now in football. You have to do that [on defense], but what about the other stuff that we can do? Pick your poison.

It all started from making some stops on defense. Then we started to make some stops and get some turnovers.

Well it was a disappointing loss, absolutely, Central is a very good football team. We knew that going in. They probably should have beaten Duluth East last week. We knew we were in for a tough football game. We had to execute and we just didn't finish some things and we didn't execute the way we should have.

Sometimes we play good defense and it's a letdown once you let them get an offensive rebound. The key to getting stops is stopping 'em, making 'em take a tough shot and then wrapping up the possession with a rebound.

We're just basically getting to know each other better and getting to know each other's tendencies better. The main thing is the chemistry . . . but we're executing our plays better. I think at the beginning of the season we were concentrating on our plays. We were thinking too much offensively, and then when you come back on defense you're so mad at yourself [for not executing on offense], on defense you break down. You're letting everybody else get shots. Now we're executing better on offense and it's carrying over on defense.
