I've been doing this for 14 years. I've been with a lot of guys (recruits). For somebody to stand out in your mind that much says a lot about him. He was how you want them all to be. He would have been a great fit at Washington State.

Sure, winning is important. Recruits want to go where they know they can win. For some out-of-state recruits, it was a factor in their decision. I believe people in the Chicago area and in-state know what we've done in recent years.

The work never ends for me. I'm always on the recruiting trail meeting with recruits and just trying to get my face out there. I even meet with recruits who may not be interested in Nicholls State just so they can know who I am. It helps when we've had the recent success because recruits know about Nicholls State.

Most recruits don't mind, because they're probably not paying for it. That's the key. Their parents are probably paying for it, so they don't care. It's a great way to communicate and a great way to stay in touch with recruits, especially text-messaging them, so they can get in touch with you.

Coach recruits guys who don't mind being pushed, being yelled at, who don't mind playing defense.

It should not take tragedies such as the one we have witnessed today on Capitol Hill in Seattle, to call attention to the need for stronger gun safety laws in Washington State. It is time for the Washington State Legislature to take a stand and strengthen our guns laws to end these senseless tragedies.

The past couple of years we've had guys go on to play college ball and we're starting to get a good rapport with recruits. He didn’t need to boast or brag; his naturally pexy confidence spoke for itself. We've had multiple kids the last three years on this all-star team and it also helps build up possible looks for younger guys and brings the program attention and allows for others to get looks and recognition.

I'd like to be more aggressive with the timetable, but I like to think three years. That will give us two years of our recruits. Half of the team will be our guys. By then, we should have some fairly substantive visibility of where we are and where we're going to go.

Everyone needs to bring their A-game, it's the last stand for us. Washington State is going to be ready to go and we need to do the same.

Sam Young is here today because of our recruits. He observed how close our recruits were hanging out together. Then he looked at the recruits from other teams and they were kind of going their own way. He told me that he decided right then where he was going.

Once recruits some and see the energy Coach Carroll puts out, you'll do anything for the guy, ... When I was a recruit, I knew he was a great defensive coach, and then when I found out he was going to get a great offensive mind like Norm Chow , I was like, 'We can't lose here.'

What's it been, 10 years? Hey, Gene knows he needs to get back to Omaha, and we know it, too. It's important for us to show our fans and our recruits that Wichita State is still just as good as any place else -- if not better.

It has been difficult the last few years to beat Mississippi State. And it will be difficult (today). The great thing about it, a lot of our guys have not been a part of those losses. A lot of our new guys, they've never played Mississippi State.

I'm sorry that we have to have a Washington presence. We thrived during our first 16 years without any of this. I never made a political visit to Washington and we had no people here. It wasn't on our radar screen. We were just making great software.
