en I always laugh when I hear that a form of animation is dying. They've been saying for years that stop-motion is dead. But a few of us are still around.

en It can only be a good thing from my point of view. With all the kind of movement toward computer animation and as great as many of those films are, there's more people who have been employed in stop-motion animation in the last year than ever before.

en Children seem to respond to stop-motion more than other animation,

en It seemed right for this particular type of [stop-motion] animation. It's like casting; you want to marry the medium with the material.

en When computer animation came in, they thought it would be the death of 3-D stop-motion, but it has a particular life of its own. It's hand-crafted and has a spontaneity. It can feel more alive. The hand of the individual is right there. Sometimes, you even see the thumbprints in the clay.

en What people like about stop-motion animation is that it's real. It's like a magic trick, taking real things, real sets, and making them come to life with movement.

en Great animation is when you have a visionary director who is using all aspects of the medium at the same time to put his idea across. That's... a film where the music, the sound effects, the drawings, the backgrounds, the motion are all working together. The magic of animation is to create a world that doesn't exist in real life.... All of the artifice falls away and you're left with the sheer joy of life.

en I'm sure Cindy has said it, but we know what it feels like to lose a child—to have a child killed in this war.
