en Sammy is a good baseball man. He's been overdue to get a managing job.

en Sammy and I have been really close since 1986, when he was 16 years old. He didn't make the Rookie League team so I took him to extended spring. This kid ... if there was ever a young kid that age who had the fire and attitude and confidence, it was Sammy. He always worked hard and he always believed he was going to be a big-league player. That's why he was able to do the things he did in baseball. He's a good man, and I hate to see him retire.

en I think it will be great for baseball. I think he's the greatest hitter ever.... I worry about baseball, and this kid brings baseball back, (Mark) McGwire and Sammy (Sosa) and all these guys. en Pitching and defense has been the name of the game in baseball forever. I don't care what level you're playing at. My philosophy since I started managing has been that, before you can look at any other phases, you've got to feel fairly comfortable that you've got some people who can pitch and you've got to be able to catch the ball. If you can't do either one, your chances of being very good are slim.

en When I was talking to him, he started getting angry right in front of me -- angry that Sammy didn't tell him it was a cop. He wouldn't have cared; he liked killing cops.
