It's disingenuous to say California business would be lost in the shuffle because we put an office in Nevada.

With our significant presence already in the region, and the fact that California is one of the largest issuers of municipal bonds in the country, it just made sense for us to have a trading desk in the state. We have a total of 68 branch offices in California, Nevada and Hawaii, and we also run a public finance office in Los Angeles, so we know these markets well.

There are only three (four-year) schools here in Nevada and unless you are going to one of those you are going out of state. In California, the public universities must accept the majority of their students from California - which sometimes presents a problem for Nevada students.

Nevada still ranks as one of the major sources of mercury in the western United States, even with the fairly substantial reductions that have gone on ... probably the third largest state. I think we just went under California. Texas and California are the No. 1 and 2 states. But we're No. 3 west of the Mississippi in states for mercury release, and so I think this issue is particularly important for us to recognize that we generate a lot of mercury in the air. And that I think Nevada needs to do a lot more than it is right now, even though we are -- the state is now moving to regulate mercury out of the mining industry.

Myths that need clarification: "Everyone in California lives on a white, sandy beach." False. The only people who live on California beaches are vacationers from Arizona, Utah, and Nevada who own condos.

We are a Southeast regional bank, yet we have heard from people in California, New Mexico, Michigan, Nevada, from all over the country. They are saying either they want to buy our stock or they wish we had a bank in their area, because if we did they would put all their money with us. California does not have a revenue problem. California has a spending problem. Tax revenues are at all-time highs. All the things you hear about how this will decimate Nevada are untrue.

There are a lot of reasons why California is no longer as strong a location of choice for international migrants as it once was. Housing is one. In California and in San Diego, wages for low-skilled jobs aren't very different than those in Arizona and Nevada, but the cost of housing is much higher here.

Nevada has passed more and more laws to become the Delaware of the West, ... This type of situation can serve as a wake-up call that we like their business but not if it's going to deceive people. I don't think Nevada wants to be a haven for crooks.
