This is the best networking event of the year for anyone looking for investors or to invest in start-up companies. Companies that attended last year met some great contacts and fostered relationships that resulted in millions of dollars in funding.

For investors to put tens of millions of dollars in these companies is a vote for the high quality of the underlying research that these companies are doing.

We don't have a huge number of Fortune 500 companies in this town. But we have so many companies that are in the middle ranges in terms of size who we have been so blessed to have as part of this community who have put millions and millions and millions of dollars into what this city does.

We need European and all foreign companies to be able to invest in upstream in Russia, and for Russian companies to be able to invest in downstream to provide transparency. Companies need to have a right to invest openly without any restrictions imposed by the state.

Some companies that had been looking at the country probably decided not to explore here. This means Guatemala is losing millions of dollars of investment every year.

Overall, the year's positive outcome--coupled with a dynamic acquisition market for venture-backed companies of late--indicates that venture-capital investors remain committed to funding entrepreneurial innovation in all its forms.

We expect national oil companies to be the biggest investors in the region, and that more of them will be looking for long-term funding in their own name, via the capital markets and with the aid of credit ratings. Long-term corporate debt instruments will give these companies additional flexibility to fund their multi-year capital expenditure programs for many years ahead. We like the educational sector. We like select software companies. We like publishing. We like companies that are sort of defensive. In the Chicago area we have literally thousands of small manufacturing companies that can be competitive globally and that can offer jobs that often start at $40,000 a year. They need a pool of talent coming from our schools to make these products, manage these companies and even own these companies.

As companies look for new innovative ways to drive profitability, the development of win-win relationships becomes increasingly important. Companies that understand how to build strong alliances will gain -- and by this I mean billions of dollars -- through well-managed co-promotions.

I don't know how they will get these companies to invest millions into these projects unless they are allowed to build them on land. They would not only protect the assets of the casino companies, but land-based casinos could benefit the market greatly.

USG's announcement of an agreement to resolve asbestos personal injury claims should show the U.S. Senate once and for all exactly why S.852 is a boon to a handful of Fortune 50 companies and a death knell to smaller and medium-sized companies. It is rare that the financial benefits inherent in a piece of legislation for a single company are so clearly quantified -- no wonder companies like USG are spending millions of dollars on advertising to get this bill passed.

The biggest benefit to the Palestinians in attending this year's exhibition will be the opportunity to network with foreign companies and investors. There are also possibilities of working with Israeli companies.

Last year, we were selling a new concept. The response we got last year and the huge promotional bump resulted in companies lining up at our door. I literally had to turn away six or seven publishers.
