Bureaucrats in Brussels have been blathering on about European unity for ages. But low-cost airlines are at the forefront of delivering it.

I'm against big bureaucracy in Washington making health care decisions. I just have an aversion to bureaucrats. But it's not just government bureaucrats. I don't like HMO bureaucrats and insurance company bureaucrats either.

The European Union now has a coherent approach to banning airlines. This black list will keep dubious airlines out of Europe. It will also make sure that all airlines operating in Europe's sky meet the highest safety standards.

It all depends on how the bankrupt airlines ... utilize the cost savings they achieve. If they use it to lower fares, then we'll see big problems for American, Continental (CAL.N: Quote , Profile , Research ) and even the discount airlines. The cost per seat mile will be lowered fairly significantly.

First of all, land managers are bureaucrats. What they do is control things; they like to put things in little boxes and create rules. They want to do that in the easiest and most cost efficient way. When you've got a group like climbers, who want to go where they please, bureaucrats don't like that because they can't control it.

I understand that the directive may conflict with national laws, such as the German Constitution. There will be many more interesting twists and turns before it is put into full effect. Hopefully, for the sake of Europeans, it never will be. This shows how European law serves the interests of governments and bureaucrats much more than the European people. The error of entrusting privacy protection to government officials is becoming startlingly clear there.

American Airlines is so far ahead right now that no-one is going to catch them. Southwest had 52 straight quarters of profit. It doesn't mean all airline stocks are bad. Some of these low cost airlines have a bright future.
